I think we genuinely have a real cultural issue over here with people thinking certain kinds of work beneath them, eg carers or low skill jobs! People can make similar money on dole, Europe is a different world!

When was the last time you worked with the elderly or disabled. I do it all the time and the amount of caring youngsters I see would surprise you. So before you start spouting bile, learn the truth and get involved.

I was an advocate fighting against abusive care homes, especially in the Swansea and South Wales area, making sure the homes weren't abusing the old folk and neglecting them and making sure their rights were upheld.

 

I'm not becoming a social worker. What do you do ?

 

I'm also young enough to have seen first hand that a lot of youngsters wouldn't become carers because they think "wiping arses" is beneath them.

 

The job is so much more than that, yet they don't wanna know. I seen loads! If there wasn't a majority that wouldn't do it then youth employment wouldn't be so high and we wouldn't have to employ the Eustern Europeans and Asians, of which there are a lot working within the homes all over South Wales!!

The wife who is a carer and has been one for over 30 years still has to look after a few young'uns she works with when it comes to the nitty gritty part of the job in cleaning people up though she is of the opinion that a career in careing is a job that money comes second to dedication and care.

Not necessarily, helping people just to have normal day to day human interactions is one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. Just to sit down and talk to a person and actually listen to what they have to say, gives them such a boost you can see the difference in their attitude to life change.

 

What you have to remember is that even though they are old and perhaps forgetful they still have the social needs that you and I have. In times gone by and other cultures they would stay in the family environment. Sadly that is not always possible these days for many valid reasons. So to enable them to interact with as wide a section of society old and young is one of the best things you could do for them.

 

My children and grandchildren have really benefited from volunteering to help mentally and physically handicapped people, it gives them a broader outlook on how the world actually works. Life is not fair and if you can do something to help people who are at a disadvantage it will help you while helping them.
