Coypu Hunter 486
Finally nailed the coypu which was hanging round before we left for the UK, couple of weeks ago. After mowing the rest of the two-foot high lawns I went for a mooch with the 22LR, since Lady Coypu Hunter had spotted the beggar earlier, munching away on the willow shoots that overhang the lake.Set up an ambush towards the far end of the lake from the house, where there's a shooting lane between the trees, which are now in full leaf. Saw the coypu swim from the far end (my right) towards the house end of the lake, but no shot. Waited patiently... stealthed along to find him... nothing... went back and waited patiently... then he swam back again from right to left. Musta snuck past me. Waited patiently, then got bored and stalked down towards the house. Found him munching away on willow shoots, 11 yards away from me, in the water under an overhanging tree. No shot -- he had his head behind a thick branch. Moved in closer, very quietly, to nine yards -- still no shot. Lined up on him, waiting for him to move from behind the branch, and luckily he moved away from the bank, swimming out into the lake, and his head came into view through the Hawke AirMax. Lights out. Nice headshot, right down on the reticle post at 9 yards (I zero at 65 yards). Just a littl'un, 10 lbs/4.5kg, 50cm nose to butt, 80cm nose to tail. A male. Don't ask me how I know. Very impressed with the A-Tec Wave silencer that I bought in the UK -- seems MUCH quieter than my SAK on the first round. When I upload the snuff video, I'll try and stick in a segment comparing the muzzle crack (or silencer slap) of both. 1 Quote Link to post

Nicepix 5,650
To be fair they are so short sighted and thick that you can walk up to them and hit them with a spade. I've done three like that on the farm where I used to live. A couple of months ago one of my clients nailed one with a garden fork while I was setting some mole traps at the other side of the garden. Coypu Hunter 486
Yours must be domesticated! The ones round here are very wary -- they dive and swim off as soon as they see movement. I normally shoot 'em at 35 yards+, but even at that range they will leg it if they see you moving or hear anything untoward. Quote Link to post
Nicepix 5,650
No end of times I've walked up to them or past them in the fields around the farm and in the fields where I live now. Sometimes the amble off slowly but more usually reamain where they are. Even the sight of a dog doesn't bother them. A couple of years ago in Marais-Poitevin we got so close to them on the river bank I was smacking them over the heads with the paddle. Same when out fishing. Rarely do they spook when swimming through the swim. There must be one coming into our garden at night. I've found the droppings a few times whilst mowing the lawn but not actually seen it yet . If it disturbs the wife's veg' lot I'll have to give it the spade edge treatment. Quote Link to post

They soon get comfy and they soon react to to danger, this fella just moved in a few days ago, not seen him around since He's only 6 or 7 metres away, he was eating algae which seemed to have bloomed a good bit this year, im in 2 minds whether to let them stay if they are feeding on algae! 1 Quote Link to post

Theirs already lots of damage, ive accounted for lots using all methods available, except by bow, that'll have to wait for a while, got my permit for it but not the $. They are not getting any chance to get re-established. Previous owners didnt care. Also do a fair bit of control for others. They are an interesting animal. But will always be unwanted at mine. Copyu Hunter do you have a dog? if so see what it thinks of coypu meat another ex-pat told me about what his dogs think of it, was very surprised when I saw it for myself. Quote Link to post
