I shave our beardie x and Imo the coat isn't as good as it used to be , its grown back finer but seen as he is near 10 and it seems to keep him cooler in the summer I couldn't care less , the young one I have I wont touch with the clippers

Don't do it! Collie double coats are ruined if clipped: you'll end up with woolly, fluffy coat that never sheds properly. I made this mistake 10 years ago and what had been a very thick, but shiny coat, has been woolly and dull ever since and can't be stripped either.

Was that a collie x or pure collie skycat?

 

I clip out some of my sheepdogs every summer and they always grow back the same.

Collie lurcher: about 1/4 Collie and the rest is all sorts. Interesting that straight Collies don't have the same problem. I must admit that I don't see why clipping should change a coat, and of course it is possible that her coat might have gone woolly anyway. I guess it's dangerous to make a blanket assumption based on one dog: I should know better than to do that!

This pup of mine has got a real strange coat. Looks smooth from a distance but it's very thick and has got a wiry fluffy undercoat. I can remove 2 handfuls of fur most days (year round) with one of the furminator tools.

 

She's got collie and wheaten in her.
