BlackStreak 498
Do many still use Dogo`s and American Bulldogs on hogs in Texas? Yes there are a lot of guys using those breeds. The apbt dominate the scene but a good many use American Bulldogs and Dogo's The dogo comes with a lot of trumped up hype and at a huge price tag and don't fill a niche that the pits and AB don't already do. If a dogo was a little faster they would come closer to filling the hype of a do it all type pig dog of a pure breed type dog. As it is though they need to be crossed with either a Dane or stag in order to reach my requirments of an all around dog and get out of the same niche as what the much cheaper and easier starting, faster maturing, more consistent pit reigns supreme in. Course the you get later maturing dogs and most people don't have the patience or understanding for this. Quote Link to post

The dane x pit F1 cross is a very easy first cross to make here in America to get pretty decent all around pig dog on the first cross. One that can be used as a lead in catch dog, on that can find its own pigs, has the just enough speed to run most any pig down, the size and power to hold a good pig by itself. No danes are hunted here but they are kinda a big misunderstood dog. They will still hunt boar well as a hole, have great speed, good holding style, pretty darn good stamina and heat tolorance and take to boar hunting with minimal effort. They as a pure bred dog are the standerd of which I believe other all around pig dogs are judged. At least by me anyway. They are often just huge dogs here, way bigger than needed. Crossing them to a pit helps speed up maturity, still yeild a good size dog, adds hardness to the dane (most don't need it though) decreases speed but still fast enough usually. You would just be really hard pressed to get a better dog on the 1st cross for all around work as you can with dane x pit. Other crosses such as ebt x wolfhound might fill the same niche as a dane x pit but these two breeds are not readily available in which to obtain so easy plus you would spend 7 times the money on obtaining these dogs in which to cross to. Further more you can use the full blood parents of the pit dane either better or sooner than you can the parents of the ebt x wolfhound. This stuff and more is why I talk about the dane pit cross as a good 1st cross. I'm not saying it's the best in the long run if your wanting to line breed but just out of a simple 1st cross to choose from, it has a lot of perks Quote Link to post
BlackStreak 498
Some cracking looking good dogs you got there BS. What's your training involve with teaching the young dogs to bite and hold the ear. I haven't had any issues with my dogs grabbing anything but the ear, however some dogs such as the stags don't always make head dogs. They might only go as far up the pig as the elbow. A dogs that's concentric circle does not center around the head /ear of a pig would be hard pressed to get an ear dog out of. To many dogs that catch ear naturally for me to need to train one. Heck I wouldnt even know how to over come this. Some young dogs won't lug up on the ear everytime. Sometimes they will other times they might catch on the rear or elbow. As long as the young dog lugs up on the ear sometimes, it will get really go straight for the ear once it matures and is fully hard. Sight hounds have a little different mentality than what most hog doggers here underatand or are used to and won't always grab the ear if another dog catches first. A little bull blood mixed with sight hound usually takes care of the quirks of a straight sight hound type dog when used for pigs. For catch dogs, a natural ear dog is desired and not many serious doggers are gonna use a dog that's not to breed to 1 Quote Link to post
king 12,030
Ah right I though the young dogs were trained to go for the ear hold mate. Sounds great sport though pig hunting. Have you ever worked or seen working Catahoula bulldogs. Quote Link to post
BlackStreak 498
I've been around some half cur half bulldog types of one breed or another but never a Leppard colored strain of bulldogs. 1 Quote Link to post
weasellurcher 113
Blackstreak, anyone run deer with lurchers in the US??? Quote Link to post
BlackStreak 498
Not that I know of. In Lausiana they can run deer with dogs but they use beagles and hounds of one form or another. I don't k ow the rules of that or why they wouldn't try to catch them with dogs. Instead I think they run them to gun. Maybe just personal preference or some kinda law prohibiting them from catching. I've been around a lot of oilfield guys from Lausiana and heard a lot of talk but if I've asked why no catching, I've forgot what was said Quote Link to post
