Pretty Decent Boar

Recommended Posts

Just barely got started tonight and was sent home because of a small puncture that took a while to stop bleeding. Kinda a minor wound but enough to make the young dog sore for a while.

It was Lapua's first really good pig to successfully hold for me. She had some top quality help on the opposite ear from my stag but being on the other side of the pig, he didn't show up well in the pictures. Lapua being inexperienced on big rank boars such as this took a little punishment. Took 2 hits to the vest and one just below it. Other than taking the unnecessary punishment, she did good.

I parked at the gate, let the dogs down and opened the gate for them. That was the last i seen of them. As they were able to squeeze through the gate, they took off for the brushy creek behind the field. When they hit the creek, they ran a few hundred yards up it and caught this boar. They were on the opposite side on top when i first seen them but as i paused for a few pictures, they made their way down the bank and into the little dry creek bottom. Not 20 yards away was a nice little pool of water they got to cool off in after i dispatched the boar. After they caught their breath I led the dogs to the truck and looked the puncture over. Decided it best if I just called it a night and took her home as I knew she was gonna be sore. It had quit bleeding by the time I made the short trip home, so I flushed it once again with iodine before putting her up for the night.

He's a decent boar, pretty average tusks but I bet the little b*****ds were razor sharp! He looks in good condition from the photo, any idea on weight? i'd guess around 160 lbs from the pics but hard to say from a photo. Hope the dog heals up well

Hard to tell much about him from pictures but he is considerably larger than your estimation. 240lbs on the weight and above average tusks. I'm not to big on strictly teeth pictures unless I have someone with me that wants to pose with the big and hold the pigs head good where the teeth show well.

He's a good pig then, fair lump of swine. What sort of country do you hunt?

About 50/50 between crop fields and mesquite thickets and brushy creek bottoms. Usually during deer season I do a lot more crop work at night and keep the dogs out of the woods where the hunters hunt. So far I've stayed in good favor with the deer hunters and am allowed to keep on with how I'm going about it. My favorite is crop hunting though as I get to see much more action.

Usually the dogs don't have much problem stopping a pig like this. Dogs such as these make it look like child's play "USUALLY" and this boar wasn't much exception eventhough my young dog did show her inexperience on this boar. She held with force and strength and wanted to fight the pig instead of hold it with finesse and skill.

I was kinda on foot. I pulled up to a field and let the dogs hunt the creek and brush behind it. I got put and walked but didn't walk far before they found this boar. Sometimes I ease around in a UTV and let the dogs hunt and other times I walk. I normally drive if I can just so I have my gear closer but I do walk a lot. I guess in a lot of my cases this time of year while deer season is going on, I'll pull up to a field and send the dogs out to make a circle. Just kinda spot checking certain areas that won't interfere with the deer hunters. Not that they are their hunting at night but they still have game cameras out. Don't want my privileges revoked because the hunters are complaining and making excuses. I'm happy with what I get to do during this time and they are too and even like going with me ow and then
