sussex 5,803 Posted July 24, 2015 Report Share Posted July 24, 2015 Having never had to buy pol hens , the farmer next door has normally got 60,000 every few months of which I can always get a few as I help him when they clear the sheds, but he's retired so I needed to buy some ....£16 each .. ...is that the standard price ...if so they will need to be the biggest tastiest eggs the world has ever seen ..wish I had replenished the run last time we cleared out ... Seen hybrids for £18 round here,a lot around £15-17 Some popped up for £8 then soon sold Pures are around £25-35 mark I managed to get some 14 wk old barnevelders for £12.50 each.reared in good conditions as well. Just the standard hybrid will do , but the wife fancies some white or black Sussex for a change ..they don't lay quit as many eggs as the hybrid's but we end up giving most of the eggs away so that's not to much of a problem .i was just a it surprised at the money they cost ...having seen what the farmer reared from day olds to twelve weeks and what he got for them there is no comparison ... devon flighter 421 Posted July 25, 2015 Report Share Posted July 25, 2015 £12 light sussex hybrids in the north west ,had some for about 18 months , good sized eggs and plenty of them in their first year but the egg production dropped offf RAPIDLY this year !they had a dose of "thoracic elongatus " and all died on wednesday,apparently the l/s hybrids tend to get fat !
