Since this is one of the last NI qualifiers for the Five Nations Championships for Terriers & Lurchers at the Irish Game & Country Fair planned for Birr Castle on the 29th & 30th August and because the show is a charity one in aid of a young boy from the 'home of the Game Fair' in Randalstown, Irene has suggested that the Game Fair team should donate £100 straight to the appeal and £50 each for the top lurcher and the top terrier who will qualify for Five Nations Show Titles at Birr. I have looked at my piggy bank and I personally will donate £20 & two Birr tickets for the top whippet; £20 & two Birr Tickets for the fastest elite dog ( best of under 21, under23 and over 23) ; £20 & two Birr tickets for the fastest lurcher and £20 & two Birr Tickets for the fastest whippet.

Springer,

Firstly: I have seen posts for a couple of shows this weekend but as of yesterday only one that claimed to be for charity and that is the one in our local area in Down.. Perhaps you would explain which other event you are speaking about?

Secondly: each year we put aside a sum of money from which we sponsor various events - both charity fund raising and fund raising for country sports clubs/organisations; and we sponsor in a small way some events in our local area. We don't 'REWARD' any events or event organisers. Once this small sum of money runs out we look for other ways of assisting these events - this includes putting up tickets to the fairs/ subscriptions to the magazine ; advertising the events in our magazine ( 80,000 readers per issue) and /or on our social media pages & groups ( c 20,000 reach) and/or giving qualifiers for our country sports championships. Few if any event organisers who approach us to ASK for assistance go away empty handed. This year our sponsorship has run to several hundred events and around in cash and kind c £20,000 and our budget for cash is exhausted. But we will still consider in kind sponsorship. Event organisers who DEMAND support or think it is their right to have our support tend not to get our support.

Thirdly : It was not my/our intention to support this or any show this w/e with cash but we had intended supporting two events with qualifiers /subscriptions . These events asked for our support. Another event boasted publicly that they did not want or need our qualifiers - so obviously we did not offer them any support.

Fourthly: When details of the show in Ballynahinch were posted I discussed this with Irene and our team. Irene is the company secretary who handles our accounts and budgets and normally tries to rein in my spending within our previously set budgets. But our family has had a long involvement with special needs children and Irene worked for several years in several special needs schools and on a one to one basis with small numbers of children for Barnardos. This is a cause very close to her heart and it was SHE who suggested extending our company budget to include this event. When a racing enthusiast asked whether there was anything for the racing I added a few pounds personally from my own 'piggy bank' . I did this on the basis that (a) the show was a qualifier for our game fair at Birr; ( B) the charitable cause involved was based in Randalstown ( the home of our Game Fair) and the event is in our home area.

I hope this explains our involvement in this particular event.

albert your third reply has answered my question

Thanks Springer - hope you didn't mind the lengthy response but there has been so much misinformation put about, about my personal involvement in terrier , lurcher and whippet events, competitions etc that I really did feel a full explanation was necessary. Basically with the motion to stop hunting with dogs going round the councils on its way to Stormont - the terrier, lurcher and whippet fraternity needs to cultivate the best PR image possible. Paul Pringle , our magazine editor, and I stand by to help create this positive publicity. We are simply not interested in getting involved in public spats, rows or name calling etc but I will defend our team against malicious allegations or threats issued by people because we simply wish to see positive PR for all country sports. We are not FOR or AGAINST anyone although some in the TLW world appear to work on the basis if 'you are not for us you are against us'. In spite of the provocation from this quarter we remain AGAINST no one and PRO country sports.

Delighted to hear that FEEDWELL and Martin Lavery have added to the prize fund so there are excellent prizes to be won but more importantly everyone who comes to the show, enters their dogs or purchases a ballot will be helping a brave little boy try to lead a more normal and active life. https://www.(!64.56:886/pages/Great-Game-Fairs-of-Ireland/366710296491 Let us demonstrate that the terrier, lurcher and whippet fraternity and indeed the whole country sports community can put differences aside for such a good cause.

The coming together of the terrier, lurcher and whippet community to support this show and cause has been truly awesome. So many people and companies have come forward to donate prizes, items for the raffle and items to be auctioned. Well done Maurice for suggesting such a worthy cause and the show organisers for taking up the challenge. A great cause, and great prize structure - if you're not going to the Kilkenny Show the CCO! show is the place to be to show that terrier, lurcher and whippet owners are amongst the most generous of the country sports community when it comes to supporting charitable causes.

A Tribute to the late John Shaw who passed away  last Thursday 6th November 25

      I Am Free
Do not grieve for me now my  friends and family, I am free
I am following the path God Laid for me
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To Love, to live, to hunt, to show my treasured Whippets, or play.
I found a peace at close of day.
Be not burdened with the times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief
Do not lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me
      God wanted me now,
      He set me free.
John, we will love you forever and you will be sadly missed by your loving family and all your Country Sporting Fraternity and in the show ring.
May the Angels above give you the best seat in Heaven and may your gentle soul rest in peace.
      For Country Sports Fraternity
