terryd 9,015
He let me have a layin till 7 this morning so up and about a quick cuppa then down the beach before it warmed up. Plenty of scent about in the dunes but little chance of catching any thing with so much cover for the rabbits. Recall is coming on good been using some extra nice treats and he will now spin around even if going full belt away from me. Unless there's scent involved. But we are building on it. Driving back then a hare came trotting around the corner on the verge. I had forgotten how big then can get I thought it was a fox initially as it was very red. Old googly eyes in the back saw it and i thought his eyes were going to come out on stalks. I decided to call in a farm on the way home where the the farmers track goes straight through the sheep field with sheep netting either side of the track so handy to just walk through with minimum disturbance. As we walked round the corner a rabbit came ambling down the track towards us. Saw us and did an about turn and went trotting down the track. He was off his route and wasn't sure where to go. The dog was on his lead and just stood there waiting for the off command lol but got a bit pissed when it didn't come. But good because he is slowly getting the message he can't go rip roaring about after every thing he see's. He would have ripped his feet to bits on the gravel track. The rabbit hopped through the fence and went and squatted in the middle of the sheep which put me in a quandary lol. So I thought sod it I have to trust him some time and got in the field with him ready to slip and we crept up on the rabbit. The dog new it was in front some where but couldn't see it. The sheep just ambled out the way. We got with ten yards and the rabbit went for it trying to make it past us. The dog was all over it and so close turned it a few times but it just made it to the hedge row. I was gutted for him as its his first real good run really and he gave it his all. He did give the odd squeak which was partly or all my fault because I couldn't stop my self cheering him on. We strolled around the sheep again but he didn't even acknowledge them just more concerned about getting in the hedge after the rabbit. I can't wait for him to get some rabbits under his belt so its a done deal and the confidence is sealed Edited June 27, 2015 by terryd 5 Quote Link to post
