neil cooney 10,416
Has anyone any photos of a cinnamon Chaffinch ? I seen one in the wild yesterday and when I mentioned it to a mate who keeps a lot of birds he said he knows of one seen last year. How rare or common are they ? neil cooney 10,416
It was beautiful and I wouldn't have seen it only I was driving at about 15 mph and spotted a flock of Chaffies. Couldn't believe it but I stopped and there he was. A friend said that one was sold for 200 last year.

Neil, I will see if any friends have any photos of the cinnamon Chaffie. I have a friend who has bred the white mutations and we had a white bird here some years back. In my opinion you could never say such birds are common in the wild, due to the simple factor being, how often due we come across such varieties? Perhaps you will already know we do get different colour abberations in the wild and in captivity of many birds. Also slighty off topic an Eygptian Nightjar was shot here in I think the late 1800s. A well known sporting naturalist had the specimen mounted by a certain Taxidermist; and I only think 2 have ever been recorded here in England.

neil cooney 10,416
I was talking to one of the best breeders of mules and hybrids in Ireland at the weekend and at first he wouldn't believe me until I explained what I'd seen and that it was in a flock of Chaffies etc. He'd never seen one and I'd love to see a photo of one. Lutra Lutra, a few years ago I was on holiday on the Irish west coast and I got talking to a shooting man in a bar. We got talking about rarities. He told me about a Barred Kingfisher that was once blown over to Ireland on the Gulf Stream from North America. "You should have seen it. There must have been 200 twitchers on the cliff tops with their binoculars and cameras." he said "and it at home in my freezer."

neil cooney 10,416
Thanks Paulus, the bird I seen was a little darker in parts than the birds in those photos. Great to see all the varieties. It was special for me to see it as the Chaffie IMO is as beautiful as any foreign finch and is one of my favourites. I park my car in the same spot every morning when letting the dogs out for a run. Last year it was a territorial Blue Tit that used to fight his reflection in the wing mirror. This year it's a cock Chaffinch and he knows I'm watching him but still batters my wing mirror.
