neems 2,406
my lurcher wont retrieve when theres another dog about after a couple of thefts by the busher, ive only had terriers as bushers and they wouldnt retrieve either,i get out with a lad who has a lab and that retrieves well, but as far as i know its only ever been out with well behaved dogs. not the end of the world they just hold it on the floor. neems 2,406
for me as long as they retrieve when alone thats enough,i think it'd be a constant ball ache worrying about the terrier stealing the lurchers kill or vice versa,i think its always gonna happen sooner or later. tb25 4,627
Think my down fall was was never really having them apart .mooching out as a team so all the bad points of the terrier had rubbed of on the other.a long summer to fix it I hope as its a real pain. Quote Link to post

Leave the terrier at home.come next season I plan on a few good nights out so want at least a half right retrieve.she's only one and mite settle..all a game to get when the terriers about and as said the terrier chasing her don't help. morton 5,369
Id never own a busher with retrieval in mind, why?,they are there to bush for the catchers and retrievers, they may hang on and rag the odd flush, yet thats never their purpose. Quote Link to post
tb25 4,627
Sometimes the busher is the catch dog mate mine works in and out of cover..plan was terrier pushers bunny out and lurcher picks up.my lurcher does both.add catch more if she was kepted on the slip.but i like to see her use her nose.flush. push bunny out and the catch.less number but for me more fun.. 1 Quote Link to post
tb25 4,627
I won't the best of both worlds if there's such a thing Morton.a good moochin dog.good nose.finds her own game and catchers it..and I want her to work at night..were i need them bunny's handed to me..as said I won't it all lol. Id never own a busher with catch and retrieve in mind,id never breed one for such, they are a tool to aid and assist the catchers, killers and retrievers. At times the bushers catch, whats left is not worth retrieving.Saying that a bushing terrier i have at hand as caught 2 fox,s this time, after pushing them from thick cover, that i find beneficial,if it was anything less id be a tad miffed.I also had a busher that hung on regardless over a field,2 fences and a wall whilst a Roe buck attempted its escape,it made a warming casserole, the Deer was not bad either . 3 Quote Link to post
Neal 1,930
The old kelpie in my avatar always retrieved everything; no matter who caught it. There were even a few times when he found long dead rabbits and dropped them at my feet. Quote Link to post

If a dog ever retrieved everything it bushed it would be 3 times bigger than a Kelpie, unless Gulliver owned and utilised it. Quote Link to post
tb25 4,627
I no what ya saying mate .my lurcher was got in to pick up what the terrier pushed out but took to doing the bushing and catching. Neal 1,930
...everything we caught...legally. And he may be only 20" but he's definitely three times every other dog I've had. Edited April 12, 2015 by Neal 1 Quote Link to post
