sambo123 683
Just wondered if anyone on here had any experience with diabetic dogs? Got an elderly terrier that's gained a fair amount of weight in the last couple of years and has recently started to drink a lot more water and urinate a lot more. Couple of people have said she could be diabetic so I've done some research into it and I'm about 90% sure that's the case. Gunna have a trip to the vets shortly. Apparently the only way to sort it is twice daily insulin injections and a controlled diet which to be honest, I just don't have time for.Would probably end up having her put to sleep... Like i say, anyone with any experience in this? Cheers, Sam.

sambo123 683
Might sound a bit harsh but I'm not messing about with injections and forking out money for a dog that i don't get any use out of. Thanks for the reply TOPPER. Sam
BOLSTER 808
Poor diet has led to it just like in humans. Exercise , fresh grass to chew on and Raw diet, simple.
dare 1,103
Dont sound harsh to me mate. Itll be upsetting no doubt but sounds more like common sense to me. See some people keep an animal alive more for their own selfish reasons than for the animal. Same with people do with loved ones.
cocpops 19
As a diabetic myself, if I had a dog I'd treat it myself. Fairly straightforward a couple of units morning and evening of insulin.
unlacedgecko 1,467
You don't have to treat it. My mother had an elderly lab that became diabetic. The vet offered twice daily tablets, but said in a dog of this age it probably won't make any difference to length or quality of life. Just make sure the dog always has access to plenty of fresh water.
Donna Wildwood 288
I had a diabetic lab, I gave him injections for a couple of years then they stopped working and his sugar levels were sky high. Vets said to take him home and spoil him as there was nothing more they could do..... I changed him onto raw food and his blood sugar stabilised he died 2 years later of an unrelated tumor. It was through Guzzi the lab I started feeding raw
