11-1 This Is Not Looking Good!

Recommended Posts

Got into the woods early last night. Ready to avenge the deaths of more peas, wheat, rape plants etc. Waited, waited, one flew in and landed, tried to get into position to get a shot on it, it flew off. Waited waited, hour before sun set, still waiting, one landed in a tree about 70 metres away, managed to get a shot at it after stalking closer and it hit the deck.

As I picked it up there was a high pitched "Cree" and coming over at treetop height were two blasted Buzzards! No wonder the pigeons had moved. These two birds were obviously treating the sitty trees as a fly thru takeaway!

Feeling somewhat disenchanted I stalked round the other part of the wood in case some had landed in the trees on the right, nothign to be seen. Then I saw the long tailed greater white ringnecked pigeon (with the red eye flashes) sitting in silhouette so I stepped out to get a better shot through the branches and it took off making a noise like a vintage car rally. It's accomplice behind it did not move. So I sent it a sleeping pellet at about 800 fps! It hit the deck with a nice thud!

So now I have to wait for the two feathered thugs to clear the area before my pigeon shooting can get back to normal!

I can vouch for that too pal. My best woody perm has gone crap this last month so while out lamping it for bunnies the other night i had a quick scan of the roosts just to see how many are around and was surprised to find none at all but 2 buzzards looking very bloomin cozy indeed. Here on anglesey you cant go a day without seeing at least 10 different buzzards and thats a bad day. Great looking birds and its nice to see them but they are growing in population like mad around here.

We have one hell of a buzzard population round here, combine that with the b*#@* red kites decimating the pheasant pens etc and it does tend to rile one a tad! I'm all for conservation but at times there has to be a bit of control over what is after all a managed environment :)
