is raw chicken legs fine as i have had a deal with a local chicken farmer who says.................. " if you get rid of these rabbits ya can have a few chicken legs"

If he's willing to 'give' them away, what's up with them? Past their sell by date at the very least. Fast track to some terrible outbreak that could cost ye ye ferrets, IMO.

 

Anyway; If ye going to wipe out his rabbits? There's the ferret feed. Who needs suspect and feartherless fowl meat - that's quite possibly foul fowl?

nice use of alliteration there ditch.......... of course the rabbits i catch will be given whole to the ferrets just as they should be but i was just thinking if the farmer is also giving me free chicken which he sells to local farm shop i must add then why not take them as a added bonus?................

i get what ditch was saying......... sorry if i didnt make myself clear. these chicken legs would be being sold to a farm shop for human consumption but as a reward for getting rid of his rabbits he would be giving me some of these legs .

Id have to say take them, its a payment of sorts, rather than him looking at it as though he's doing you a favour letting you ferret, it's plain to see he's looking on it as helping him with his rabbit problem,

at the very least you could remark as he's giving you the chicken, that the ferts will get the rabbits, but you and family are having "chicken tonight" Im sure as a farm selling produce, he'd soon say if it was "fowl" if he knew you were gonna eat it

Sorry, W15. Maybe I misread the situation there? If the guy's acting out of kindness and is truly looking to 'do ye a favour' by giving ye some fresh, human grade flesh? Sure, take it. And, as Stubby says; Make it clear that it's obviously too good to waste on ye ferrets, so ye'll eat it yeself as a family meal.

 

However, none of that excuses the fact that ferrets are better fed on something closer to their natural diet. That would be a 'Whole' chicken. One with some feathers still on it. That provides them with the roughage their systems were evolved (or " Created ", if ye will ) to deal with over millenia.

 

If this farmer breeds chickens for the table, why not ask about any lesser specimens he culls anyway? Undersized. Injured. F*cked up. Because they'd be the first to fall to a wild 'ferret' anyway.

 

And don't be shy of hand ripping the bulk of the feathers off such birds, before slinging them in there. Because ye ferrets will rip out a good many feathers themselves ~ and that just makes their quarters unsightly and unpleasent to clean out. But they'll ingest a lot too. And That helps keep things sweet.

thats why i said about the actuall legs ......

 

think i might go round the farm tomorrow and scope out the land see how many warrens etc and see how many rabbits i would be looking at roughly

 

hopefully enough to keep my we critter fed for a good while yet...... thanks for all the input lads very helpful..

Thats the trouble i love chicken & when i have 30 bob in my purse i have to really struggle with my conscious i couldnt buy chickens who have lived in them horrible sheds , so i would rather buy something else
