FERRETBOY 680
I decided last night to try some night time ferreting. I have a cracking spot that has some nice open warrens which make it easy netting and you don't have to worry about losing your ferret but still , I chose to use an albino ferret rather than the polcat. All the warrens I circled with the longnet, 50yrds 6z quickset system. I enters the ferret and with seconds a rabbit bolts, it hits the net but bounces over and makes a run for it. Gem gives chase but as expected the rabbit gets away. As im trying to sort out the net and get Gem to back at the same time, another rabbit bolts and gets proper tangled.I am dispatching the rabbit it gives out an almighty kick and cuts through my hand which imediatley starts stinging but I continue to call Gem over. She finally comes and we move onto another warren. Again I set the net, spread the bagging evenly to prevent anymore escapees , enter the ferret and wait for the bolters. Again I don't have to wait long as two rabbits bolt at the same time into the the same section of longnet and both get tangled. Gem tries grabbing one whilst I dispatch the other, I try also to get her to come off the rabbit but she doesn't listen. I stick my knee on her rabbit and continue to try and stop her mouthing the rabbit as I chin my rabbit. I then calm her down and move her away from the rabbit still in the net and chin that one also. three rabbits in less that 20 mins. I re enter the ferret and another rabbit goes to bolt but sees me standing over the hole and retruns to the warren, amature poacher .The ferret catches up with the rabbit and I get to stick my hand into the hole to remove the fourth rabbit. I try another warren that doesn't produce and then continue to the final warren. The longent isn't big enough to go around the whole warren which is about 10 holes at most. So I have to stand in the gap between the longnet. Gem sits patiently at my side. I stroke her neck and run my hands down her back to calm her frame. Then a rabbit bolts , it hits the net and Gem flies in straight after it but pushes it back out the net and gets herself tangled. The rabbit escapes and I have to untangle my pup. It was then another rabbit bolted staright over the net im trying to sort out. Gem goes after it but it reaches the hedge. then another rabbit bolts for the gap between the longnets and also makes for freedom. It was a great couple hours in the end with a tally of 4 rabbits. The pup doing me proud and is as silent as a mouse. She moves over a warren like a seasoned dog already, paw raised and ears pointing to the sky. Just love watching her learning and making mistakes. thanks for reading rew 11 Quote Link to post
