Daz39 962
Our lass was studying last night so I decided to have a quick couple of hours up at work. I got there for 9 and as there were still people on site, I had a walk round the neighbouring farm field which is also my perm. NV Boy AKA Matt had taken 3 on here the other week and there were a lot out tonight, 20+ easily. However, as always on here, the slightest mention of a red lamp and they were off. I walked the full perimeter to see where the rabbits were running to and decided on a decent spot to lay up. There was very little light, but I could just about make out where the grass ended and the hedge started, after 25 mins, I was about to give up when I saw a dark shadow. I knew it was a rabbit, but couldn’t make out eyes, so I flicked on the lamp, hoping he’d sit still long enough for me to take a shot, He did, so I did, and that was the end of him. 28 yard paced off the pod. I walked a little further round and lay up in another good spot. Again, 20-25 mins in I see two shadows running around. One ran into long grass the other looked to be directly in front of me, however this time when the lamp went on, he darted for cover before I could scope him in. Lucky rabbit. Next full moon I’ll be back on here and try my luck with that light versus the lamp. By 10 I decided to go on site. On driving in via the visitors car park I saw 2 rabbits on the lawn. I parked up and stuck the 100 out of the window. When the lamp went on the rabbits split up. I followed one and when he sat still I took a shot….and shot my damn wing mirror! Christonabike the noise was terrible and the pellet bounced back lord knows where! I now have a nice gouge in the passenger wing mirror! Oops. I set off again to the main car park and 2 rabbits ran in front of the car onto the other lawn. Again when I pulled a little further round I thought I could see ears in silhouette, I had to switch to lefty as the rabbit was off to my right. I could see him ok in some diffused light, so took a 26 yrd shot, left handed out of the car window….not wing mirror this time, only rabbits head. Down went number 2. I had a walk round the back of site, saw 3 pairs of rabbits but all were away before I could get a shot. Back round the front of site I went to the far lawn where I shot my wing mirror. I scanned the lawn with the lamp and saw nothing, then movement out of the corner of my eye away to my left….a rabbit….running…..right towards me? Without a word of a lie, it ran to within 10 yards of me. I was rooted to the spot, still as a post. At that point the rabbit must have gone – Huh? This don’t smell like a tree?? Now I come to think of it, it doesn’t look like a tree…..ahhh shite….and he turns and runs 5 yards….then stops. So he is 15 yrd away, my rifle is “off the hip” and my AO set at 30 yrds….I slowly try to raise the rifle and at this point, rabbit really spooks…. Runs 10 yards further off then stops again, looking at me all the time. I take what feels like an age to get the rifle to shoulder height, scope him up, pop, 26 yrd standing shot right behind the eye. Stupid bloody bunny. I half expected to see mixy but he was clean as a whistle. It was 11 now and I decided to head back to the car and home. As I started to walk down the drive I saw a shape sat on the road. It was a good 150 yrd off but when I check the scope it was a rabbit. I used a few trees to get closer but at about 70 yards I had no more cover. I went prone and tried to commando crawl a little closer. I estimated 50-60 yards and got the rabbit in the scope. He was sat up so I put 1 mil dot on his eye (Thinking 40 yrds is normally flat, 50 1 dot, 60 2 dots, if I underestimate the distance the pellet was in a line with his spine). I took the shot off the bipod and thwack, down he went. I stood and paced this one out, 58 yrds! The pellet had dropped lower than the eye but was right on the neck, the rabbit went down with a little twitch but was still by the time I got over to him. Without a doubt the longest shot I have taken and very happy with that one. 4 in the bag then, and ready for the security guard who I’d seen during the day and was begging for a couple of rabbits to make a pie. Happy to oblige, especially as he says he has a couple of vintage air rifles he wants to sell….. 1 Quote Link to post
