Matthew Phillips 36
Just picked up a second hand rifle today. A remington 597 22 wmr. It said it came with moderator and upon looking when i got it home it's stamped 22LR. Now i know the bullet is the same but the energy is different between 22wmr and 22lr. Is this going to be a problem? I have't fired it yet. Many thanks Quote Link to post
andyf 144
NO that'll be fine. Quote Link to post
ratbuster 808
Don't think it will be very effective, because the velocity of the .22 WMR is much higher than that of a .22 lr. To get the most out of your silencer you should stay below mach 1 aka subsonic. http://www.hornady.com/store/22-WMR-30gr-VMAX/ Edited September 26, 2014 by ratbuster Quote Link to post
andyf 144
When I said 'fine' I meant that literally i.e. it's not going to blow up, burst or yield any other catastrophic event, and I think that was your concern? As for it's effectiveness as a sound moderator well that's a different thing, try it on and off and you'll see what I mean. The supersonic bullet makes the crack you hear, not the cartridge firing, and this will be going on outside of your rifle so the moderator cannot 'moderate' anything after the bullet is in flight. The moderator will soak up some of the 'bang' from the powder, but there's not much powder in a rimfire of any type anyway, so the scope is limited. That's why big centrefires with large powder charges and very loud 'bangs' moderate much more noticeably better. But the only true way to go 'silent' is to have sub-sonic projectiles, and your not getting any of those out of a 22WMR. Oh and by the way in case you were wondering, NO 22 LR bullets can't be fired from a 22WMR, the WMR case longer and is bigger in diameter, they are not interchangeable. 1 Quote Link to post
Deker 3,491
Top is my WMR with standard un-proofed SAK, it has been on it since I bought it new about 4-5 years ago, its fine. Second is a Sirocco, on my HMR, when that dies (the first Sirocco did) it will get a SAK, the other 2 are .22lr, and run on SAK anyway. Edited September 30, 2014 by Deker Quote Link to post
Cedric 132
Matthew Phillips - at least you had the sense to ask! I was looking on the Facebook rimfire page and the following post - there are some idiots around ! · Daniel Allen i have a .17 mod on my .22 its better than the sak i had but cant compare cause i aint got a .17 · Xxxxxxx If you using a dedicated 17HMR mod on your 22lr you are a brave brave man · Daniel Allen why · Xxxxxx 17HMR dedicated mod has a smaller hole than a 22lr, pull the trigger = serious injury or worse · Daniel Allen the guy that makes them tested his on his 22-250 and it was fine i think a 22 will be fine too. all these dedicated mods for .17 are just a money maker Cedric Daniel Allen - I think you must have your wires crossed somewhere or else someone has been having you on. I have.both .22 and a .17 dedicated Swift moderator and a .22 bullet head will not even fit through the .17 hole ! This would make it extremely dangerous to fire a .22 through. Maybe when this guy who makes them tested it on his 22-250 it just blasted the exit hole larger. lol 1 Quote Link to post
