J Darcy 5,871
Finally got my hands on a DOC, the 200, and first impressions are of a very powerful, well designed, well made trap. I have posted a few pics here just for those who haven't seen the trap before. However, for some reason the effective use of this trap is somewhat restricted by the crazy legal stipulation that the New Zealand designed tunnel is used only. This tunnel was designed to stop kiwi's getting caught. However, there are no kiwis in the Uk, so i cannot understand how this crazy 'box' has been allowed to become a legal stipulation. Surely you would think that as long as a tunnel to stop non-target animals entering it then everything would be fine. IMO as long as the 'box' with its crazy baffles has to be used by law then this trap cannot be utilised in its fullest extent. JMHO of course! Quote Link to post
Phil Lloyd 10,739
I like the Doc Trap,...but as stated,..the designated tunnel,.. is a bit of a feck up... Having lived through the Spring Trap Approval process within the UK ,...nothing much surprises me now... Facts are,.I can see a day coming, when there will only be a trio of Humane Killing Traps allowed.... Yeah, I like the Doc trap.... Quote Link to post
Matt 160
Thanks for posting that JD As you and Phil have rightly pointed out; the tunnel situation is just ridiculous What could be a useful tool in the box has been made unrealistic due to the short sighted attitude of a few civil servants with no grasp on reality Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
Although the trap is legal for mink, the opening to enter is so small only a female would eb able to fit i would say. Does anyone know if it is legal to increase the size of the entrance hole to allow such critters access or would this be contravening the law? What a crazy no-common-sense situation Quote Link to post

talpa 55
The box design was to prevent Kiwi's accessing traps and to put the animal in the optimum spot when it puts weight on and triggers the trap which is made to strike and crush the head for a quick humane death. As I recall the stao mentions the box has to be used as specified by the manufacturer, so you can make the box as long as it is identical, altering tthe size of the entrance would be iffy in the eyes of the law. I have'nt had one in the hand so am suprised and there again not surprised that they may not be an appropriate tool for the job listed on the stao. T. Quote Link to post
J Darcy 5,871
This is the size of the opening. Looks to be about 55mm. Where's the common sense? And the DOC 250 is also passed for rabbits, so there's not going to be many rabbits getting in that gap! Quote Link to post
john b 38
I tell you what i don't like about them - the trigger plate is very slightly wider than the striking bar. Why on earth do that ? Surely a set of fixed shoulders would ensure that the target was well and truly inside before the trap fired. As it is there's too much scope for a foul catch in my view 2 Quote Link to post
