Big Ask I Know But ,

Recommended Posts

hi guys , i know this is a big ask but i am after a couple of goldfinches as my wifes one she has been hand rearing has died and she is devastated .

i dont have a lot of spare cash but i am willing to exchange my 14 bengalese and 8 zebs for a couple , or would swap my as new .177 stoeger x20s wood stock for some as hate seeing the wife so upset , failing that if anyone has some for sale please let me know and i will try to sell the rifle to fund them

It's a bad time of the year mate as just about all are breeding and any young have not gone through the moult yet..ask the same question around the October month and you will get a more positive answer..

thanks millet , ideally would like a young bird / birds that the wife could hopefully get hand tame , or a pair that i could hopefully hatch some from , was just hoping for somthing to occupy her as she has been with this bird solid for 4 weeks , i put him in the aviary and think he flew into the wall , so feeling rather guilty at the moment

Likes been said pappa it's the wrong time of year either to sell, pass on or buy any young birds and to hurry will end in even more heart ache as they need to moult out first and that's stressfull enough for them at the best of times.I myself won't,can't be purswaded or be bought into letting any of my young birds go before they moult no matter who it was or how keen they are to get a bird or two,i keep birds because i like them and not to do my best for them before there ready to go would be going against the whole princible of my bird keeping.Just trying to explain others will feel the same and it'd be someone who won't have the birds whole interest at heart who would sell you any young birds this time of year imo :victory: .Patients grasshopper and it'll be worth the wait for healthy fit birds

thanks for the replies , i will take the advice from you guys as i know you are alot more experienced than me and couldnt put the wife through having another just to lose it because of my inexperience plus waiting will give her a chance to make sure she definately wants to keep british finches .

2nd question is a aviary and flight letting the birds mix in a group better or are they best kept seperate i have 3 triple breeder cages i had for my canaries and a 6x4 shed with 3/4 of one side open with weldmesh double netted , do i need to build a seperate flight and housing to keep the goldies or could they mix with society finches

The best thing you could do Bear is get a pair when they are through the moult...then let them breed next year that way your wife can hand rear and have as many tame bird's as she likes.. .. the Goldies will mix ok with the canaries out of the breeding season.. but when the breeding season start's it would be wise to separate them unless you want a load of goldie mule's.. :D

I mysefy can't answer if Goldies would mix with community finches but they can be mixed with other natives but it'll be down to the invidual birds as i have mixed goldies and greenies in the past ok during the breeding season and produced both young but one greenie cock i have now i couldn't do it with as he's aggressive to other cock birds.
