How Much Barrel Damage

Recommended Posts

I was out with my .22 Rat Catcher, enjoying a little rat busting the other night, and I picked a .177 pellet out of my pocket. I opted not to shoot it, and got a .22 loaded instead.

Only just remembered it, and I had meant to ask when it happened.

If a .177 pellet was shot down a .22 barrel, how much damage would be done to the barrel? I'm assuming accuracy would be awful, but curiosity has the best of me.

Anyone got any data or experience with this kind of thing?

I don't think any damage will be done, first pellets are very soft much softer than the iron from which the barrel is made second even if the pellet didn't fall from the barrel it won't rub on the rifling much if any, most of the air will escape from around the pellet. It would be like dry firing the gun, a snug pellet has a lot more resistance than a loose pellet and should ware the rifling faster (which takes decades to do).
