Bloody hob has got a huge abscess under his jaw just wondering how much the vet bills going to be as its going to cost me 18 quid just to have a consultation, cheers

how big is huge ? it might be on the verge of bursting its self

dont know how much the vet will charge but i would brace your self i would say by the time they have knocked it out operated and treated with antibiotics and pain killers you will be looking at at around £100

OK I'm not a vet but if it has come up very quickly then i would agree its an abscess maybe try bathing it in Epsomsalt's and as hot as he can handle water. epsomsalts will draw it to the surface (from any garden center or horse suppliers ) ideally you would soak it in it but because of where it is it could be tricky or if he will sit still long enough by some animallinlex (horse suppliers ) and apply as a hot poultice for twenty Min's a couple of times if he will sit still on your lap you might be able to hold it there these are both the ways i would deal with an abscess on a horse once it has broken through the surface you will see lots of yellow puss and a little blood keep bathing it until it is healed and keep it as clean as possible if you are unsure take him to the vet and explain the situation he might be able to arrange a payment plan or other alternative

this is just my opinion good luck

Just a thought. I have dealt with a lot of abscesses through the years. I have found that if you are confident enough in what you are doing you can lance it where the abscess peaks and drain it that way. Make about a 1/4" to 1/2" long cut with a sterilized razor knife or scapel just deep enough to puncture and squeeze/flush it out, rise it out and fill it with antibiotic ointment letting it heal from the inside out.

Another option is, if you can tell its filled with fluid and don't want to lance it, take a sterile syringe with needle, insert into the abscess and draw out the puss. Then if your vet will prescribe you some antibiotics this should clear up. If he won't check out the website

www.terrierman.com and check out his section on treating wounds. There are anitbiotics you can pick up from the Pet Store for fish that don't require a script. He has the dosages list for use per pound in dogs. This can be a very inexpensive alternative to the vets office.

Cheers,

Kurgan; I'm with Clancy, mate. Do it yeself

Young mate of mine once had identical arise on his ferret. He brought it to me and I first shaved it. Then I washed it in Dettol solution. Then simply stroked it with a fresh scalpel blade. Ferret never even flinched ;)

As has been said, white coat'll take ye to the f*ckin cleaners. They'll want it knocked out to start with, because they'll be trashed of it. Then they'll bill ye for " Putting it on a drip " :censored: Be lucky to even end up with a live damn ferret!

Pat Burns does give some great advice about antibio's on his site. But ye'll not find them in any british pet shops, mate. White coats have that monopoly sewn up over here :censored:

if i had known this i would of told you to do it your self to begin with i just didn't want to advise someone who isn't confident to stick a knife in there fert I'm sure you have every thing you need to sort it plus some and dont worry the ferrets tough enough to take it

sorry if it sounded like i was trying to teach you to suck eggs didn't know your a medic if you can hold someone together you can deal with this with your eyes shut

my hob ferret developed very similar last year and the vet charged me £79 to drain it to see him twice and for 2 weeks of antibiotics

i know that was cheap.

However the abcess has since filled up several times, i am diabetic and use very fine lancets for testing my blood sugar, they are small very sharp sterile pins, whenever his abcess fills up now i pop it and squeeze it empty.

Do you know anyone local who is also diabetic, or ask to buy some lancets for blood testing at the chemist, you screw the plastic head off the lancet revealing a needle/PIN , pop the abcess and then put the cap back on and throw.
