Ducks

just need a bit of advice . i have to put down about 250 duck this year on a dug out river with no island. steep banks one side and big grass area the other.. do i just elec fence off big area of grass or what!! Any ideas appreciated

We used to but stopped bothering. It's not like in a pheasant or partridge pen where if a fox gets in the birds can't get away. Any trouble and they'll just take to the water and safety. That works for us but every shoot is different. You may find you need an electric fence... I'm sure others will share their wisdom.

You could make a pen that sits half in the water and half out. Give them a few days to get used to the place then let them out.

If you don't want to do that you might find for the first wee while they want to go for a wander....just keep push in them back. A week of visiting the pond last thing and with the lamp should help them settle in.

You could make up a wee island mate, couple of small barrels/ gallon tubs/ logs and build a wee wood frame or a few pallets on top and put a sheet of wood over it and anchor it out where you want it

I release a similar number on a pond, no pen or electric fence. Just make sure that the grass area is either short, or mow it before your ducks arrive, so nothing can hide in it and ambush the ducklings

i have found in the past, that electric fence on its own, has limited success, as if the ducks are not penned within the electric fence, they have a habit of wandering! Best of luck

The fence is not there to keep the ducks in it's there to keep vermin out.

thanks all . sort of thoughts i was havin.. i bloody hate ducks
