Outlaw Pete 2,224
Having a sneaky look round Noel's main farm yard. The one up on the road. Just keeping an eye on shit and seeing how anything might be doing. Lovely little discovery! I've found an east facing shed wall. It's about twelve foot high. Recessed back into a main shed. Right at the back of everything. About twenty foot across? I've looked at it. Squinted. Weighed it up. So, we've got this hidden, east facing, dark gray wall, eh? Bolt threads sticking out near the top run. Where two sheets have been put together. Sucks gums ..... Cracked it! Get my ladder up there and measure those bolts. Get the nuts to match them? Washers too. Job's a f**king good'n! Right there's me anchor points! Wrap some of my wire round, behind those washers, and I can hang starling boxes off them! F**king brilliant! I Must 'run into' Noel , soon. Couple of planks and I have some gray, roof paint here. I can have half a dozen 'invisible' boxes on that façade before the season's out! Got about thirty out, as I type. I'm aiming for that big Five O! Imagine that? Fifty f**king starling boxes?! Each one full capable of producing up to ten chicks a year ....?!? I think I'd better go lay down for a bit now ....!

Mr Wilkes 3,163
Pete, you say its east facing , does the orientation of a nest box matter ?. do certain birds do better facing a certain direction ?.
Outlaw Pete 2,224
Mr Wilkes; F**k Yeah!!! North, through to East is the generally accepted preference, mate. Starlings particularly like east. House sparrows, in my experience, are buggers for the north. North facing wall, covered in ivy? Sparrow metropolis. Nest boxes get hot enough as it is. They're effectively little brooder sheds ~ and we all know what They're like! Go and hang one out in the full glare of the southern sun? Ye go from brooder to oven. So, yes, west to southerly exposure is generally to be avoided

Outlaw Pete 2,224
I never knock anyone about nest boxes, mate. They've been an obsession of mine all my life. " Bird Gardening ", they used to call it. I've got some right old books on the subject too. Ye really should get ye arse on that Group. Shit loads of information lodged there. Cutting plans and all. Oh, and this isn't looking like the earliest starting of seasons either. Ye still have time to bang some boxes up and get takers This year. Box will seldom get a taker, sat around in ye work shed.
