Pups Born

Recommended Posts

I fully agree 3 turns but your also harnessing the bond the pups will get with there new owners, I think at 8 weeks you'll be able to get a good idea of what you've bred? Atb with them, a nice cross for getting the job done

If I bred a litter I'd keep as many as I could on for what ever amount of time ot took wether it be 8 week or 8 month. If Your going through all the hassle of breeding you want to make sure you get what you want

 really???? sooner the rest have gone sooner you can start work on your pup and sooner the owners of the others can start on theres!!!! i fully admit not many people can tell which pups will make the best out of an 8 week old litter but its been a standard practice thats worked for so many years i see no reason to change it now!!!!! imo keeping a litter for so long is just detrimental to all involved.........you cant keep them all and if you have bred off the best dogs you possible can then its not really a gamble............

Yep 100% I would. At 8 week old your picking a shape and colour if your going to do that it would be easier to go buy one in, if you have gone to to all the hassle breeding in the first place another few month isn't much. give you a better chance to get a good guage and look for the qualitys you want in a pup

None, I've not had a bitch worth breeding from yet And i dont see the point in breeding for the sake of it theres plenty of well bred pups about but if the time comes and i do breed my litter i will take as much time as i want to ensure i get the Best pup that suits me out the litter. My old man has bred a couple (gundogs) over the years so I'm well aware of what is involved in rearing a litter before you start with all that bollox

Ive a bitch in pup at the minute, ill be keeping two, and another two are being kept by a family member, but we intend to keep all the litter untill such a time as we both pick what we want size wise, confirmation wise and temperment wise ect. i dont see an major problem keeping them on untill your fully happy. Too much goes into breeding to get out of possibly the biggest/best pups in the litter...

There's obviously 2 trains of thought but as said if you've bred from the best them choosing shouldn't be so difficult. I'd be wanting to put time into my pup as soon as I could. If your thinking of keeping a litter together for any longer than 5 or 6 months you'd be better putting the surplus in the ground and not passing on untrained cast offs.

I wont start bollox but can you explain to everyone if say you had a litter of 6 pups how you would go about ,rearing, kenneling ,inoculating ,training, feeding ,socialising ,stock breaking ,entering ,etc etc 6 pups for 8 months and then picking your choosen tyke and then finding homes for the others ....

My old man was a brick layer but I cant build a wall

What do you meen how I would go about it? The same way I would if I had only kept one pup. Cost and time wouldn't come into it if your bothered about that you shouldn't breed in the first place. My main goal would be trying to ensure i get the pup or pups i had tried to achive From the breeding. i never said I would keep them all I said I would keep as many as I could I never said I would keep them till 8 month I said I would keep them that long (or longer for that matter) if thats what it took for to come to a decision

your words not mine ...im not going to argue about it with you ...but I would rather put everything into 1 pup than little into a few and if you realy wanted to know if you picked a good un you wont find that out for a few years not months

And in replie to your edit "my old man was a brick layer but I carnt build a wall" obviously this is in relation to me saying my old man has bred litter in the past so I know what it entails.

As it happens my old man was a Brickie too, and I can build a wall. You was obviously uninterested or unteachable

Exactly, you could keep them all 12 months but it wouldn't mean one would kill more than the other..

Good luck with your pups 3 turns and keep us updated ?

I totally agree fazza, I never said that's what everone has to do I said that's how I would to It. The main point I was getting at is that the 3 turns was questioned why he wanted to keep them all till 12 week, the breeder should be able to keep them as long as he likes without being questioned as he's gone through all the hassle of breeding them
