Iv had em from some commercial fisheries and as a lad on river but they was tiny. We bought some 8 years ago now an put them In our pond with sturgeon and carp and they huge now, I know our pond ain't same as wild fish but just curious to know how big they go in wild?? Don't know the record but I'd say 4oz would be a beast... 1 Quote Link to post
NEWKID 29,015
My dad taught me the finer points of stick float fishing and I taught my son, but the computer games got him and he was lost to fishing forever. He still comes just to watch me sometimes, but can't be tempted to have a go, even when they are crawling up the rod. I had a good session last week with the bread punch and stick float on my local river. In three hours, I had over 8lbs of mostly roach, with small chub, big gudgeon, and a couple each skimmers and rudd. ">http:// My blog report http://www.urbanfieldsportsman.com/index.php/roach-queue-up-for-bread-punch-on-the-middy-stick/ Nice bag there mate, bread punch and stick, lovely... Lol It's either tench on the canal or a crack at the bass this weekend Quote Link to post

NEWKID 29,015
Just out curiosity how big is a big gudgeon mate? Iv had em from some commercial fisheries and as a lad on river but they was tiny. We bought some 8 years ago now an put them In our pond with sturgeon and carp and they huge now, I know our pond ain't same as wild fish but just curious to know how big they go in wild?? Don't know the record but I'd say 4oz would be a beast... Record was 4oz for years don't know what it is now, last time I checked was Anglers Mail annual 1978 I've a little claim to fame with the anglers mail mate, 20 years ago I done a centre page article for them.. Front cover was a pic of me silhouetted out with the caption " don your waders with our agent"... They used to do a feature each week on different venues called, mail mission, they'd set an angler a target on a water and then do an account as a time line with photos.. I had to catch 10lb of fish in 4 hrs on the tidal Exe, I'd been fishing it a lot back then . First time the photographer came down ( a good bloke called Paul Hamilton, very good angler too), the river was in flood, the swims wanted to fish you had to wade accross the river almost to the far side, there was a stump in the water and I'd stand on here, you could then run a stick under the trees on the far bank, with the river in flood I couldn't wade out so it was a waste of time. I tried and caught a couple of dace.. Bollocks I thought lol.. I was working in the tackle shop at the time and i had wednesdays off, i said to Paul come next Wednesday, if we have no more rain it'll fish it's nuts off... Set my self up for a fall here I thought lol.. The following Wednesday the river was perfect. f**k I thought, I'm gonna blow it, I was only 17 lol... Wade out, on the stump, apron full of maggots, with a pouch of gozzers that I'd pick out of the riddles in the shop ( big fat maggots that wouldn't go through), these were the killer bait on the hook... First run through, stick float burys... Strike and a real solid fish on... Shit myself again lol.. Paul clicking away... I'm thinking don't lose this fish Ffs.... After a couple of minutes I net a cracking chub, around 4lb... I'm shaking like a shitting dog by now... Next run through, float dips, strike, solid... f**k me it's another chub same sort of size...get in, I've nearly done the mission in the first 2 casts... In the first hour I had 5 chub all that sort of size... I lost a bream on the surface, was at least 8lb.... Bumped a couple off other decent fish, the tide pushed me off the stump and I tried to fish the waggler over but that was it... Result... Around 15-20lb in the net, Paul telling me it's a great session, I'm smiling like a Cheshire Cat in every photo lol.. The weird thing is, I've fished that swim loads of time and it was always a bag full of big dace and the odd chub, bream etc.. But I didn't catch one dace?.. It was like the glory fish turned up that day lol.. Sorry to go off topic, but it was a nice trip down memory lane lol Edited March 12, 2014 by NEWKID 7 Quote Link to post

kenj 131
That's the trouble with fishing under pressure for the camera NEWKID. The week before that blog post with the roach, I went to the same swim. The river was up and pushing and struggled to catch, losing a couple of good fish. When you're playing them you think, this will be a good picture for the blog then ping they're gone. I went out today for some perch on the canal, got a couple of smallish ones, then hit the daddy, only to lose it on the top a few feet from the landing net. I went out with a mate at the weekend, who has been getting some pike doubles, so took the camera with me. Result no pike! Sorry to hyjack the post. 2 Quote Link to post
RubyTex 1,957
Great to see you passing on your knowledge and enthusiasm for fishing to Fin, Kev. No rivers near me, there's only sea fishing and 2 reservoirs within easy reach and i'm shite at fishing both 2 Quote Link to post

I'm plodding along ( with a banging head ).. picking up a roach here and there, I thought a couple of pound should be ok.... boom... Mick and Owain catch a couple of slabs... my couple of pound of roach look like shit now... It wouldve been a respectable 2nd without the bream... mind you the grin on Owains face was priceless, turned up no gear, wins the f***ing thing and takes home a £100 match rod .. I don't think he stopped smiling all night ... That;'s what it's all about mate Hopefully see you at this years, a bit closer to home at least.. 2 Quote Link to post
