pablo esc 1,598
The summer before last, i was at a foodstore and aman had a few geese and a Cockerell for sale, i bought tem and took them home, fed them up and later got a few hens. I got my dog's stock broken to them, had eggs and they were looked after great, they were out all day and in at night, I had them for over a year, hey if a man got hungry, he could eat. I'd be checking the ditches as the was fox about., but they were sneaky, i saw a couple cubs to. I kept them away in day, and i didn't go to mad out for them. I saw them at night looking at shed and looking to we're the dog was barking. These Foxes weren't starved, and we're getting food around area, however the kept sneaking, I went out one night and was trying to get home, got back at one clock, saw one run of, thought, basted and looked and it been through door, and had a few, i went to the earth in day and there was dead Cockerell, i took it back home and left in garden in a day dog run, bstad, was back and took it before it could be eat here, i got more and they got them. So I checked about, and no luc . Snared below and no luck. So put it in me garden, and one morning got a big fella, and quickly dispatched it. In winter, i went below and my dog was barking below ground, so I blocked off and [BANNED TEXT] i got back, i removed spade at the entrance and then, the was small commotion and another guy fox, and humanely dispatched, anyway i be getting no more chickens Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,102
Not being funny mate but foxproofing anything is easy .Shut them in before dark and everyones happy .kill every fox in the neighbourhood and the the next one along will do you if the sheds not up to it .18mm ply with 12mm wire mesh tacked on outside dug in the ground and up 3 foot will stop anything.Pay attention to doorways as these are a favourite in for the buggers . Sort this out and get some more mate . 1 Quote Link to post
jeemes 5,418
My hens are in a good shed made from 9mm ply. It has a proper door on hinges with a lock. The run is ordinary chicken wire but with extra round the top and left loose. If its taught things can climb it. Its best at 6ft I think. The bottom is reinforced with rabbit mesh. I have never had one hen taken in many years despite having a fox covert 500yds away and cubs being fed in our garden. Has FD says dont give up just make a proper place for them. 2 Quote Link to post
fat man 4,741
No need for all that work, just run 2 strands of electric fencing around the bottom of the enclosure and 1 at the top and a good battery fencer or mains if its near the house and problem solved,1 dart of the fence and foxy wont be so eager to try and push under or over again.A good battery fencer costs in average around 220euro +10e for wire and your set up,easily erected, you can use an old water hose as an insulater for the posts cut at about 4in and just run the wire through then tack it to post.1st strand around 4in off the ground to stop fox diging in under your fence,2nd around 10in higher with a 3rd about 3in over the top of the run derected outwards as it will stop foxy from trying to climb over. Squirrel_Basher 17,102
Up against a shed and run he will get zapped i guess but ive seen them go through a fence 4 foot high with wires 6 inch apart on more than one ocassion with no ill effects but out in the open as a deterrant around organic chicks Quote Link to post
jeemes 5,418
We used to lamp inside free range places. There was nearly always a fox inside the electric fences, although they seem to mostly ignore the odd left out bird roosting on the ground. Personally i think they can jump those fences. Thats why i say 6ft. Some say they listen for the pulse! Anyway you dont want youre pets/kids/grandkids getting shocked aswell. 1 Quote Link to post
