1888andybhoy 7
As the title says whats the best bait for grey squirrels. Ive been asked to do a job on a mixed hardwood / softwood plantation along the edge of a river. Its to blood test the grey squirrels then a re introduction project in 2 years time with red squirrels. Will be using cage traps as theres very few reds already there so no fenn traps incase of catching reds. Is wheat any good in this enviroment as thats what i use on my syndicate that i keeper on fenn traps at all feed hoppers with wheat in tunnels. Or do you guys prefer anything different. Thanks, Andrew Quote Link to post
jamie mc 168
Peanutbutter of sweet corn is my preference but wheat will work. Quote Link to post
OldTrapCollector 377
Maize is good especially if thrown over bare earth - the visual attractant is as good as the scent OTC Quote Link to post

Matt 160
Buy yourself a bag of whole maize. It's bright yellow and squirrels can't resist it. Peanut butter is good in urban or suburban areas, but whole maize is much better in woodland. One trick I learnt years ago is to pick a few cobs before the forage maize is harvested and slice the cobs up. Thread some high tensile wire through the slices and hang them up to somewhere warm and dry and you've got enough bait to last the season. The cob slices are also ideal to wire above the trigger plate in cage traps and helps stop the problem of traps getting dug under and bait theft through the bars of the cage. A handful of whole maize thrown down in and around the trap brings them right into it. Quote Link to post
