man o kent 269
I don't know if any of you remember this series that used to be on down here in the south, but I was watching some of the programmes from the 80s recently and it was refreshing to see a lot of the old fieldsports and past times that were featured like ferreting, game shooting, fishing, mole trapping and fox hunting. Its been a long time since one of the big 4 terrestrial channels dared to put something like that on mainstream tv! Perhaps the producers of countryfile ought to have a look at some

man o kent 269
I know for a fact you can still buy the old series on line, that's how uncool I am! Its a bit sad when I look at some of these old country boys, on tv 30 years ago, long gone, and see that their generation of people with a real connection of working the land, before the days of modern technology and pc madness is gone. End of an era!
Nik_B 3,791
there was a massive disconnect between the countryside and the towns, it must have happened back in the 1950s or so when people starting to think that life would get better and they could cast off the 'old ways'. I think that's where the class warfare comes from....read Danny the Champion of the World for example. I also have a book by Iain Niall called the Gamekeeper which documents a huge social change in attitide towards land owners and gamekeepers and that is way back just after WW1. forest of dean redneck 12,023
I remember when little/late 70,s my grandparents having the veg garden, stocked larder, airgun by kitchen door etc ,dad had an allotment which was mainly spuds,as our garden was small at home, Then he got promotion ,allotment ended ,and spuds were bought. I think that's when it happened for a lot of people,he knows the old ways but can't be arsed and has never had a interest in country sports but ate game when a kid as he was born in 1947 so it was still tight even then after the war. So I reckon 70/80 s people's attitudes changed.
man o kent 269
I think the class divide is back, and there is an even bigger divide between people who work in or have a connection with the countryside, and the rest of the suburbanites, wether they live in the towns or villages. I see it in the village I live in. People move down from London, and they have this glorified view of the country, as if it looks after itself, and is not the product of centuries of farming and hard work from country bumpkins like myself. My dad says I was born too late, I should have been there in the 50s when some of the old world still lived on in the rural folk
