wirral countryman 2,110
Tom, if you're going to keep dogs for a long time you'll soon learn not to panic when a dog gets injured, most vets will string you along for as much as they can, your dog sounds not badly hurt at all, I've had dogs run into gravestones, stumps, in fact all manner of things and a fit dog bounces back very quickly, its a tough game and if you run to a vet every time you get a knock you might as well give all your wages every week straight to the nearest vet, most of owning a running dog is common sense, find some decent lads that have had dogs a while and they'll put you right, let them have a look before any expensive treatments,so long as nothings broken most other things heal quickly, hope you get sorted, WM 3 Quote Link to post

sandymere 8,263
A vet or someone with experience is never a bad idea if you’re not sure and it’s a good way to gain experience as to what to do in the future. Ask questions! Find out what their thoughts are and possible diagnoses. If it’s just a haematoma (bruising/bleeding under the skin) feel it so you know it next time. Arnica rubs are likely useful and I used to use them a fair bit 20 years ago, I tend to use modern anti inflammatorys now as they work better helping with pain as well as inflammation. Plus massaging is better left until you know what your dealing with and its has settled a little or it may do more harm than good. As to taking Arnica orally, it’s poisonous and isn’t sold in the UK in tablet form, at least not legally. Homeopathic sugar pills may be bought with a label saying arnica but at the 30x dilutions they don’t actually contain any arnica so are safe if ineffective waste of money. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnica Quote Link to post
TOM HEAVY 140
took him to the vet, as I am inexperienced and didn't want my dog ending up worse than he is, the vet was really helpful, she prescribed some anti inflammatory medicine and check him over with movement assessments describing and pointing out as she went. She assured me that his bones were ok as he was quite comfortable whilst under examination. She also recommended that I take him out for up to 6, 5-10 min walks per day for a week. He should make a full recovery within 2 weeks! The check over and prescription only cost £35 so glad I went! At least I'll know what to look for next time round and I am definitely going to research some injury and alignment information as it is obviously a vital part of the trade knowledge. Thanks everyone for your input ATB in the future Tom Heavy 1 Quote Link to post
