Guest SJM
A mate of mine has been looking for a stud dog for his bitch for ages and has asked me to try the forums again and see if anyone has the dog hes looking for. His bitch has a bit of saluki in it so he doesnt want to use a dog with a lot of saluki, he wants a fast dog with a good mouth that can kill them quickly but also has enough petrol in the tank for a few runs. He will pay any fee and travel any distance, but he needs to be able to see the dog running. He doesnt want anything with bull in it, just a 3/4 grey 1/4 saluki or something similar. It has to be a hare retreiving dog, last time I advertised I was inundated with pms off well meaning rabbiting folk and he got phonecalls off lamping and ferreting folk, please dont waste your time or his if you dont have a dog thats doing 3s on long ears in the winter he will not be interested. Its a long shot but someone must have a decent dog theres always folk bumming and blawing about how good their dogs are, where are all the good dogs when you need one though eh? PM if you can help. Cheers in advance Quote Link to post
tyson 1
good luck cos i dont think you will find a dog that way bred that can do that , maybe kill odd one or 2, but not 3 good winter hares consistently , if you do find one id like to see him run aswell Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
Its a long shot Tyson but you never know whats out there unless you ask Quote Link to post
Guest Top Chalker
SJM there arnt many 3/4 bred dogs , infact i dont no of any , there are plenty of well bred dogs that throw fast types , that can do 3/3 , , its not allways the fast ones that can kill the good hares .................your mate should look into a well known line that throws a fast typ of dog Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
I think whats bothering him TC is cos he bred the bitch before with her half brother and the litter threw very saluki-fied and they were too slow for up here. As you know the saluki gene is a strong one, you dont need much saluki in a dog for it to show its traits. Hes hoping if he uses a dog with a small percentage of saluki and a higher percentage of greyhound he might eliminate some of the litter wastage. I know there is some good line bred saluki lurchers at stud, but he doesnt seem that keen on using one, I think its a case of a bad experience puts you off. Its been suggested to put a greyhound over the bitch, but she isnt lacking in speed, so the breeding probably wouldnt benefit him, hes looking for a similar type of dog, fast, can stay, not too much saluki, to suit the type of running up here and the style of dog he likes, hope that explains a bit better Quote Link to post

Lennard 10
Yeah why not a good whippet stud. Size down a bit maybe and make it "quicker" and more useful in small landscapes? I would say a big YES to a grew with some saluki blood. L. Quote Link to post

L. she knows what she wants lennard , shes looking for a stud dog that ticks the other boxes but just dont have much hope for her finding a dog of that breeding that can do what she expects but i hope she does Quote Link to post
Guest SJM
He doesnt want to use a whippet, he doesnt have anything against them, his bitch he runs at the moment is whippet bred, but he knows what he wants for this particular bitch. To give youse an idea of the look/size and running style of dog he is looking for I would say something like Gary Dickinsons Red that ran in the Forleys - that type of up quick and on them pressuring straight away, a dog that sits on their arse and forces them into making mistakes so it can kill them quick. Something along these lines is what he is after and I dont know of any whippets which have enough power, size or stay to do this, no offence to the whippet fans Quote Link to post
Butler 396
Your asking alot but there are dogs out there that tick all the boxes You say he wants to see the dog run, to tell the trueth if i was lineing a bitch with my dog i would want to see her run if i didn't already know of the bitch. tyson 1
there are some good dogs out there , but not the way bred 3/4 grey 1/4 saluki all the best hare dogs have a lot more saluki in them , and there are some fast up and at them style dogs CN dog JACK is one dog that has that style, TOPCHALKERS the man to ask but lads like CN wont show you there dogs run as lads like him have nothing to prove when hes owned several of the best dogs in the business. if the bitch is really sharp it wont do no harm in putting a good saluki based dog over her , as i think if you go a 3/4 greyhound you will definatley knock staying power off the pups so really you want to be adding more saluki to the blood to balance it out. i have relatives who dont like too much saluki and they have been breeding of the same lines for years with out success as there dogs just dont have that required stamina ,i think you may know the same lads , chester does its alright running at the speed of light for 30secs but what happens when you get a good hare thats as fast as the dog on some nice ground , i know what wins hands down and the inevitable will happen , the dg will eventually run out of steam , sooner rather than later. so by adding a bit more saluki to the bitch the pups wont be lacking they will be gaining , as saluki hybrids arent exactly slow , but what you will gain is a fast dog that can control its speed more but thas just my opinion i can only offer my advice as ive saw people make same mistakes when breeding dogs best of luck with finding MR right Edited September 26, 2007 by tyson Quote Link to post
