Td5 Fuel Probs

Friday night out lamping and the disco stopped and wouldn't start, now I run mine on 100%biodiesel, so I assumed it would be the filter as ive put a few hundred litres thru but never changed the filter,next morning new filter purchased (£15)and fitted but still no joy, so I rang the landrover specialist I got it off and he suggested it would be the gauze filter at the bottom of the in tank pump, so I removed the pump and rightly enough it was bunged up with gunge, spent a while cleaning it re-fitted it ,went thru the self bleed process but still wouldn't start, he then informed me the pumps probably f****d, so today I bought a new pump(£216) fitted it and still wont start, ive pulled the feed pipe of the engine and theres fuel flying ,so theres defo fuel getting to the engine but it wont start, any knowledgable lads on here could give me advise, to make matters worse I removed the new pump and re-fitted the old one and theres fuel getting to the engine, so therefore my old pump aint f****d but he wont refund my money, so im actually (£231) out of pocket and still no further on than I was on Saturday :huh: cheesedoff.com

not sure about the injectors, im not really mechanically minded to be honest,

where will the ecu plug be? theres an electrical plug right beside the feed pipe level with the inlet manifold, will that be it? I was also thinking if theres fuel getting to the engine will the fault not be electrical.is there not a reset switch or something similar, as I say I know naff all about engines

check the filters full, then crack off 1 injector at a time and get someone to turn the engine over until you get fuel then tighten down. do this and i bet it'll start on the 3rd injector bleed ;)

Not 100% on this but do they not bleed themselves of air when you turn it over?

ive ran of of diesel plenty of times in those bloody things, :icon_redface: i always crack the injectors ;)

 

seems you dont need to crack them off, they auto bleed seemingly. i stand corrected sir. :thumbs: cant hurt tho :D

I didn't fill the filter, but pumped the throttle 5 times which then puts it into bleed mode, and the engine management light comes on, it then pumps for 30secs then stops pumping for 5secs, and does this cycle 6 times, after its done it 6 times the engine management light goes out and the pump stops pumping, indicating that the system is fully pressurised, so if theres fuel getting to the engine then surely the filter is obviously full as it sits behind the drivers side rear wheel,am I right in thinking this?.

the landrover bloke I spoke to said I couldn't crack the injectors, then said something about rail pressure and pressure valves ??

SORTED!!

I didn't bother disconnecting the FPR fuel return hose and purging again, as the hose is short and space limited, so difficult to get a suitable container in place. Fuel would have ended up all over the shop!

However, discovered that I had HomeStart as part of my AA cover (rolleyes.gif)! Chap turned up on his motorbike which I thought would be no good for a tow-start if needed! But with 2 booster batteries attached and a spray of some carb cleaner up the old air intake manifold whilst I turned it over, it reluctantly fired up! Been for a couple of spins this weekend and all seems well with the world again!

So an airlock in the fuel channels or injectors it t'was. Just needed a helping hand to get the injector cams going to purge the air out. Moral of the story is; always purge the fuel system of the air that gets locked in (unavoidable) during replacement of the FPR BEFORE trying to re-start the engine (or do a tow-start if you have the capability)! And buy a bigger booster battery and a can of carb cleaner to keep in the back as well.
