Gareth12 225
Looking for people who are keeping birds in built up areas. What set ups do you use? At the moment I have my hens free ranging in the garden in the day and bring them into the garage to roost with my cocks in the evening. Thinking of using a wooden garden sheds, im finding that the hens are making a mess of the garden now the weather is turning. Problem ive got is moaning neighbours as usual so ill probably keep hens and stags seperate for the winter. any problems with this or am i better off just putting up with neighbours moaning and leaving stags out with the hens? Ive got the stags in converted rabbit hutches at the moment in the garage to keep them quiet. Ive got bantam OEG's, ko shamo and warrens.
burnie69 376
If you've limited room why not stick to keeping 1 sort. Then you can have more of that breed. I'm not a fan of indoor cages but I know a few people who use them to good success. if your keeping them indoors have them on shavings cleaned out regular and the good thing is when you turn out the lights they stop crowing. Mine only have to see a torch light and they start but I've no neighbours so it isn't a problem. The thing is in winter the ground soon gets shitty and it never dry's out until spring. bullx100% 681
carnt you section of part of the garden and make a couple of smaller pens.if you have access to a garage why not make resting boxes to put your stags in over night so they don't start crowing first light and let them out at a more convenient time for the neighbors. as if the neighbors complain enough times to the council or environmental health they can put a stop to having chickens and fowl all together.i live in a built up area(council estate)i have one pen which holds 4 warrens one pen which holds a pair of fowl another pen which im building at the moment which will be able to hold two pairs or two trios.at the moment with dark nights and mornings coming in the problem with stags crowing is not to much of a problem but when light nights come and early light mornings come in il be putting the stags in resting box's to roost and letting them out around half 8 in the morning
Gareth12 225
I've decided on getting a log built 8x4 shed, will separate this into a few pens and have the run outside this around 8x4 again, ill keep the stags in here and the garage and rotate every so often... I'm planning on a nice window fitted onto the shed so that plenty of light gets in. Hopefully this will reduce the noise and keep them all happy.

MoChara 1,632
Was looking forward to an alarm clock.! Love hearing them crow, never had a bird of my own do it yet. Typical, just my luck I could put a bet on that any roosters through the little birds wont crow either, so roughly ill have 5 fecking mute's! Gareth12 225
One of my ko shamo's was the loudest Crower I've ever heard! He just would not stop from 5am till dusk! On the whole they are fairly quiet breed though, I think if you keep them with a decent amount of hens it keeps them busy, also if you give them plenty of bedding, and dust baths that seems to keep them concentrated on scratching and pottering rather than making a noise! only problem is I like the hens to free range and my neighbours would not tolerate having crowing birds wandering around the garden at any time of day!
