i would go and work for a local company first, that way you get all the experiance you need in treating all the pests you have never done.

and you will be getting paid.

its alright doing courses at killgerm ect. and even doing your b.p.c.a exam , but theres nothing to beat practical experiance. especialy when given by an experianced operator. TOMO

I Agree with Tomo. You are better off trying to get some experience with a company. There is a lot more to pest control than people think. You can not build a buisness on things that you do as a hobby because a lot of pest control work that is enjoyable can not be charged for because there is all ways some one who will do it for free,Ie rabbit shooting. And alot of rat jobs are done for free by local authoritys.

A big chunk of the pest control industry is insect work which you realy have to cover to make a living, but all this work is very interesting and rewarding.

Also if you get experience with a company not only will you learn about the different pests but you will be shown how to survey and carry out risk assesments, you would be shown how to carry out all your treatments correctly and to minimum risk to others,Because when you start doing any type of work to do with the food industry and other buisnesses things can really become a headache especially when auditors are involved.

If you do decide to give it a go on your own make sure you are fully insured.

I hope this has been helpful to you and has'nt put you off starting up on your own.

The best of luck what ever you decide to do.

I am looking into starting up a pest and vermin control business. Has anyone got any useful advice on how to get started, courses available which would benefit me, etc. Many thanks

Good advice from all the lads,... :clapper:

What I would say is,....whatever you intend to do,...'Do it soon'.....

Legislation,...rules and regulations',.etc,...are getting more and more strict each year,...therefore it is best to go for this life style,.sooner,.rather than later'....

All the best,.and good luck to you....

Cheers,.CHALKWARREN.... :drink:

Bpca mate. They have loads of courses. I did the part 1 diploma and it cost about £800 i think. Its called something else now, but thats the main course to start.

Whereabouts are you? There is very little money in agricultural pest control basically because there are too many lads willing to do it for free ( cant blame them) but there is money to be made in city's.

If i gave you any advice it would be to not give the dayjob in for a dream of starting it up in pest control for yourself unless you are well flush cos , honestly, the money is very poor. Youd be better getting a job with a pest control company- you will still get lots of jobs doing the "good stuff" like shooting pigeons in warehouses etc, but the majority of the work is checking rat boxes etc and its quite enjoyable as well as bringing in a decent-ish guaranteed wage.

i work 99 % for farmers and estates , its badly paid and bloody hard work , but i love it, if you specialise in something , trapping moles , trapping rabbits etc , you will get the work, i work for places that have plenty of lads on that rabbit for free , but cos they aint getting paid , they don,t put in the effort a pro would, but you will need qualifications and the best way is like the lads say working for the big companies , get them to put you thru the courses , gain some experience , then go for it,

Setting up on your own when you're inexperienced isn't a good idea.

Look around for jobs with the big companies- Rentokil, Eagle, Ecolab etc. The training will be excellent, and in a few years, you'll be primed to start up on your own- potentially with a client base to poach!

I was determined to become a pest controller- I looked into starting up on my own, but managed to stumble into a job with the biggest company in the country, and now I'm doing work I enjoy, learning all the time and don't have to worry about not getting paid!

Have a look about mate, there are always jobs coming up- apparently the pest control sector has one of the highest turnovers of staff of any industry.

Im just setting up on my own as we speak, the set up costs are low as i have an abundance of gear and will be concentrating on fur and feather rather than insects so it cuts out the initial big out lay on insecticide courses but i will probaly do them in the future. The biggest outlays is the public liability insurance and advertising but if you have a few quid to tide you over till you establish a few customers go for it.
