Casso 1,264
When we stop breeding for purpose or drive we are going down the KC route, breeding for form only , Every day out with the dogs could be their last that's understood but what we as owners have to do is minimise the risks by edcuating ourselves and countrywiseing our dogs to the best of our ability All drive is , is heart when we stop breeding for heart in working dogs we've lost something so fundemental in our game , that we become no more than pet owners . 2 Quote Link to post

skycat 6,174
From the photo, and I know that photos can be deceiving, the dog, if it is the rough coated one, doesn't look that fit to me. There is a great deal of difference between working fit and running around fit. The dog, and again, forgive me if appearances have deceived, it also looks a bit overweight. Also, there is the breeding to consider: dogs with no, or hardly any, Saluki in their breeding, need a lot more fitness conditioning if they are not to suffer badly as a result of an unexpected long distance chase. There is a huge difference between running several rabbits, and sustained running for minutes on end on the back of a hare. Can you honestly say, hand on heart, that the dog could trot 5 miles fast without blowing? Could it also gallop alongside your car or bike for at least a mile without blowing up? Even then, the twisting and turning behind a hare cannot be replicated by galloping in a straight line when getting fit. I'm doing an article on the whole thing, so bear with me and I'll put it up tomorrow. Quote Link to post
Casso 1,264
Working dogs have always been bred for heart , that what makes them so loyal and inspiring to man kind, It's only modern society that has a problem with this , in other working dog related activities no one is not breeding with heart in mind , the problem lies with the uneducated owner not the dog , been breeding for drive all my life with varies type of dog and have never had a problem that could be solved with a less driven dog for working purpose , If you understand it you can control it , drive is easily channeled but it all comes down to understanding it not rejecting it out of hand, 1 Quote Link to post
paulus 26
simplistically If a dog's prey drive is greater thans its physical ability then there can only be one outcome, a dog with its prey drive and physical ability evenly matched is the ultimate goal, Quote Link to post

So in that case it is purely his build and shape which don't lend themselves to sustained running on the back of a hare. I used to see it a lot when I ran hares with 'hairy' dogs, heavier built and more muscley than Saluki types. Even at their fittest, they couldn't last behind a good hare, and they paid for it afterwards. It's a bit like asking Linford Christie to run a marathon. Quote Link to post

See i use toby as an out and about dog if he puts it up and in the bag im happy ,but i am just happy to be out with the dogs they dont have to catch thats just the bonus part ,but i do put all i can in time and effort to get them fit ....i kept him in for the last 24 hours to see what he was like and to be honest he has drove me mad sat staring at the lead draw, bringing my cap to me and been a general pain in the arse ,this is how toby is when he needs to let off some steam ,he has gone back to normal with his drinking and urinating ,will see what he is like tomorrow and see what the vet says then i might give him a run on the night Quote Link to post
