obi2 241
Iv been out the past few weekends and finally things seem to be falling into place with young dog. Don't think he's gonna make the grade as digging dog so iv had him out with the ferrets and hawk. The holes he wasn't intrested in we put the ferret down to check and right enough they were empty. Then he was giving good marks so put the ferret in and sure enough had rabbits bolting. He Hasnt false marked yet and is starting to go into heavier cover and becoming keener, so im pleased with the way he's coming on. 1 Quote Link to post

foxtails 272
sounds like hes coming on a treat, when i first had my terrier i bought her when she was 3, shes 6 now, but at first every hole she sniffed she wouldnt give a mark, in the end i decided to go against her nose and, geuss what she was right, but she didnt give a mark on so many holes that it got on my nerves, but there was just nothing at home, i changed area as to where i knew there was rabbits and low and behold , she 100% marking and has never let me down since, she'l hold the rabbit untill i get to it, bushes ect ect, in time your border will come on great, sounds like he's getting there fine ATB mate FT Quote Link to post
obi2 241
I had the exact same thing mate, was a bit pissed off at him when out a mooch coz he wouldn't go into cover or again mark any holes. Got some new permission that is moving with stuff an this is how he's behaving now. Quote Link to post
Jamie m 668
Had the same but with an older lurcher. The best lesson he had he tried to pick the ferret up it ran off round the garden snuck up and bit him on the ankle he lept into my arms yelping , let the dog keep pinning rabbits , mine soon twigged ferrets go in rabbits come out , Quote Link to post

But, whats the betting if you come across a hole with fresh rabbit signs out side and he does not mark, you will still put the ferret in. TC 1 Quote Link to post

Tiercel 6,986
TC Are you trying to make a point about something? Yes, that most people do not trust their dogs nose enough. I have lost count of the times I have seen people forcing dogs into cover, when the dog knows there is nothing there. TC Edited September 5, 2013 by tiercel Quote Link to post
obi2 241
He's only just started so there will be the odd one I will check if I think it might be occupied. I admit I was one for trying to send dogs into cover when they weren't intrested but there are somethings even they miss. Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
If the dog is marking now, he will not miss a rabbit. You work him into the wind and if there is a rabbit infront of him be it bush or hole he will mark or flush it. People take little notice of wind direction when bushing dogs and then moan when the dog misses a rabbit. Use the wind and the dog will find. TC Quote Link to post
