Ireland Rabbits, Ferrets & Poachers At Birr Game Fair

For this year's fairs we have looked at the humble rabbit as a Pet ( one of the largest rabbits in Ireland was present at Shanes Castle); Agricultural Pest ( it is reckoned a rabbit can eat as much grass as a lamb/sheep); as a sporting quarry including the use of ferrets, long netting and whippets & lurchers and as fine food. Now the theme runs forward to Birr with Steven McGonigal extending his main arena demonstration on how to catch rabbits by longnetting to include Ferret Racing and a Ferret Show on Sunday 1st September at 11.00am. Steven will also perform his long netting routine at other times during the two days of the show including his Victorian Poacher Display - this time with a new adversary - 'game keeper fast hands Eddie Dash'

 

The Ferret Racing will start at 11.00 sharp Sunday followed by the show - this should enable participants to get backover the Mount Palmer to see the final of the Mourne Digging Championships. Top prize for Champion Racing Ferret and Show Ferret respectively will be a Ferret Box by J&J products and an engraved tankard.

 

And continuing with the rabbit theme Steven has co-operated with Emma Cowan of the Flavour magazine and Great Game Fairs of Ireland Chef Emmett McCourt to create some excellent rabbit dishes in the Flavour Fine Food Festival pavilion.

Awesome news!!!! it's fantastic to see the ferrets again taking to the stage at Birr. I wish Steven and everyone involved a super successful and fun day out!!! I would highly recommend anyone interested at giving long netting a go to watch Stevens display as it's very informative and it certainly encouraged Vermin Catcher an myself to give it a try.....and to be honest we wished we had tried it years ago....as it has accounted for us getting many more rabbits and gaining us access to land we couldn't have ferreted any other way.

I'm sorry you guys couldn't make it to Birr as your event at Shanes Castle will be a very hard act to follow BUT I am booking VC and you for Birr 2014 now.
