baw 4,360
I tell what guys, most of you are talking about taking a dog out daytime can spoil it on the lamp, hunting up etc. this is a trait I don't like even in daytime. The only time I don't bother is when out a walk where there ain't much stuff, dogs can mouch about. But on permission, the last thing I want is the dog f*****g off and doing its own thing. Ok it happens from time to time, some animal scents are just too tempting but hunting up can be a liability. surely 'f*****g off and doing its own thing' is different from hunting up.......a spaniel or pointer hunts up but are under control......how could you teach a dog to gate net properly if it hadn't been taught to hunt up under control ? how could it mark a hidden bolt hole if it didn't hunt up ? I don't have a spaniel and if I wanted to gate net, I'd get a collie. The key is where I said I, as in me. I don't like this trait in a dog, that ok with you bud Quote Link to post

Surely if you've spent time with the dog(s) and got a reasonable standard of obedience, they will, if given time out, "know" what they are doing Lamping, straight back when the light goes out, (normally ) daytime, if the quarry has bested them/escaped, back to the slip, so they can have some more sport. Had them "won't come back types backalong - not again Put the hours into your dog - if you want something half decent IMO Cheers, D. Exactly mate. Everyone hunts different things different ways. Some of use dogs for more than 1 field of the sport. If I'm out ferreting and setting nets the dogs know their job, if I'm out a walk on the hills the dogs know their job. Lamping light off, its to come back etc. I've said it before on here, we find the dog the chases, it does the chasing. You let it do both and its a recipe for disaster. Yes we all mouch but the dog should know what's expected of it. Quote Link to post

We all know the feeling, ferret in, sitting on the grass, dog staring at a hole ear cocked, next thing nose in the air and away after a white arse lol. I went with a guy out for more of a mouch than anything, his dog f****d off as soon as we were on the ground, came back every 20 mins for a visit then off again. The guy didn't seem to care, I'd have buried it. I think he never shouted on it cos he knew it would have made a fanny of him. Quote Link to post
