bigbailey 90
Hi folks being self employed undertaking pest control, does anyone know of any product suppliers that don't charge vat? Or do they all charge vat to self employed folk? 20% Vat on everything takes the pi**. Quote Link to post

DIDO.1 22,864
look at all the top 3 suppliers and they are all a few quid apart on everything, price fixed to feck. Quote Link to post
Matt 160
You've got to remember that if they turn over more than 75k they have to charge VAT by law. Given the low mark ups on some pest control preparations, it's hardly surprising they have to charge it. In fact, if they don't charge VAT then you should be worried Quote Link to post
bigbailey 90
I've noticed prices changing within the last few weeks. One of my suppliers was a few quid cheaper than the other, now they are both more or less spot on the same all but a few pence. Yeah you are right matt you have jogged my memory from a few years back when I was vat registered by choice only so I could claim it all back. Its always the same the little man comes worse off!!!! If you are doing mainly domestic work its hard to ad the mark up in with the Joe public prices, whilst still remaining competitive with other businesses. Money makes the world go round, so they say, must of been someone in government that made that statement up along time ago Quote Link to post

Matt 160
When it comes to selling preparations, the suppliers don't have a big mark-up and it's a very competitive market. They make most of their money from the non-chemical goods they sell. Quote Link to post
DIDO.1 22,864
I'm not saying your wrong, just in my experience of (very limited experience admittedly) of pest control mark ups iv seen very little evidence of keen competition and reckon all the main suppliers are in it together! both on chemical preparations and equipment. Certain insecticides that would cost well over £100 in the uk plus vat and delivery are available abroad for less than £20, maybe the market is a bit more competitive there! I recently wanted a pair of telescopic ladders, killgerm were the best part of £200 yet I got the same pair from another source for less than £50. Same with my new bee suit. Im sick of lining middle mens pockets wether its suppliers, organisations, advertising or anybody else. The only thing I cant find cheaper is rat bait! Quote Link to post
