I can't understand this thing about people separating jills from their kits. Kits, like puppies, wean themselves automatically once they have teeth and are old enough to eat meat. I have never, in over 30 years of keeping ferrets, separated jills from their kits. Make sure there is enough food down at all times: a bit of dry in a bowl all the time, and meat every evening once the weather has cooled down a bit. Big bowl of water to encourage kits to drink.

Another advantage of leaving the kits with their mother is that they learn from her to trust the hand, come to call, and not be scared of huge human giants looming over them: our current litter watched as their mother ran towards the wire of the court every time she saw us approach. Most kits, even those already well handled, go through a scaredy stage at around 5-6 weeks especially if they are in a large court, but with the good example of the jill, they came as she called to them, and were soon at the wire with her, sniffing dogs' noses and hands etc.
