Does anyone in Staffs fly a bird of prey?

I've never seen it and its something that has always interested me. Would love to go out with someone who knows the game.

I know a lad in Liverpool who flys a Harris and has said I can go out with him when the season starts but it would be good if there was someone local aswell.

Cheers. Gaz.

The bloke has had hawks and falcons for 14 years and does alot of work with a falconry centre. He was at one of the game fairs today putting on a display where I went to meet him.

He has offered to take me out and let me fly one of his birds aswell as teach me the ropes with regards to all aspects of falconry.

I aren't going to rush out and get one. I'm going to spend 12 months of going up to him on a sat or sun and see what I can learn and then decide if its the route I want to go down.

Cheers Chid!

Thanks pal. Yeh I think it's a good way to get into anything. Learning first hand from someone who knows. Forums and books are all well and good but nothing beats first hand experience.

Handled a golden eagle today. What a beast that thing is!

I'm gonna be hunting fox with one in a couple of months. The male is 7lb and the female is 14lb flying weights!

I thought the male was big! The female must be huge.

I think I've dropped quite lucky to see some of the things I'm gonna see over this coming season!

Yeh in the UK mate.

The bloke has got a thick wooden stick that goes through his vest for him to rest his arms on. Haha.

The 7lb male was some size so I can't wait to see the big female!

Really heart thumping stuff fox hunting with a male goldie!

I can't wait to see it.

Does the thrill of a bird in pursuit compare to the thrill of seeing a lurcher behind its quarry do you think?

Ive seen both and the flights are better by far in my opinion, birds have very different flying styles, mine stays high and drops on to them so if they jink off he has time to recover it, wheras my mates flys them right up the rabbits arse end, better flights but loses more as the rabbit can turn sharply and throw the hawk.

And the eagle can take on 400 yard + flights and still take a fox, would like to see a dog make up that ground before the fox does.

Sounds awesome mate. Can't wait to see some of it first hand!
