The same thing has happened to mine. Not quite as bad as that, but I would be interested to know what it is caused by as well. I was guessing it was just to do with the time of year. Maybe a simillar thing to some lakeland terriers losing fur on there noses & tails in the summer months.

is this the ferret that you were talking about recently the one that just came out of season !

if so if hes not itching it i would think it hormonal and maybe a little stress from his new girlfriends :D

keep an eye on it i imagine it will grow back with his winter fur.

I was thinking similar

Yes he did come out of season, well his balls went away. So I introduced him back to the jills and he was fine (not mounting them) but his balls have come back again now. He isnt mounting them though :victory:

He seems fine, hes playing with the others and isnt scrating it at all.

Hi this is called Rats tail and is a normal happening seen especially with albino's though others get it too... check for lil blackhead looking spots etc... you can try using some acne clearing stuff as it does help clear out the pours but its not crucial... usually has something to do with a molting season, stress, or hormones... most people i know who have had this happen find the next winter coat finds the hair back as full and fluffy as ever... the only thing ot watch for is it creaping up the back and sides.. which can be a sign of an adrenal disease...

Rat tailed ferrets (tail alopecia)

Some ferrets lose most or all of the hair on their tail every summer. This phenomenon, called 'tail alopecia,' is most common in males. The tail begins to look like a rat's tail, with scaly skin, sparse, bristly hair, and blackheads. This is a very unattractive but harmless condition with no known cause. Many nutritional, medical, and dermatological remedies have been tried, and sometimes the hair grows back, with or without treatment. Usually when the ferret changes his coat in the fall, the tail hair regrows, but he is likely to lose it again the next spring.
