as the man said, you need to get the obedience side of things all sussed before you even think about going hunting else the dog will just feck off and chase rabbits without a second glance at you. all summer to get some training done, ready for a bit of work in september, no rush

A lot has been said about obedience and training which is fine but the one thing I would add is not to fall out with the dog over little issues, jumping up or similar actions which can lead to the dog having negative associations with coming into your space

You want the dog to fully embrace coming to you with a free spirt and eager to make contact that's the basis of a good natural retrieve
