Bobba_fett 117
Hello, I have has always been interested in fishing but growing up never had any friends or family who fished so I never had a chance to try it. I am a grouse keep now and have just moved up to a highland estate which is mostly grouse but it has a bit of red deer too. There is no least fishing but there are a few smallish rocky stream what have trout in them. I was thinking about having a go fishing the trout, but don't really know what I need. A check list of the bare minimum i would need, would be useful and a good book to read up how to go about it. Thanks alot, Tom Quote Link to post
billybaltic 308
I have never fished small streams but i would be thinking about a small fly rod, maybe about a 5 weight, small fly reel and as for fly's i would think really small spider patterns, wickhams fancy and i always have to have a couple of pheasant tail nymphs, as for a leader, i would think 2lb-3lb, but that depends on the size of fish, like i said i have never fished this type of water, more river and lake fishing so maybe this set up can be tweaked a bit, good luck. Bobba_fett 117
cheers billy, I think i would prefer to use a float in some of the bigger pools if that possible? and just sit and wait rather that casting all day. Quote Link to post
billybaltic 308
Maybe a link ledger in the pools, you could always trot a stick float through and hold back now and again. Quote Link to post
NEWKID 29,105
I fish a few smallish rivers/streams for chub and roach and catch a few trout in the process, for that I use a stick float and run it through the deeper runs as Billy said holding the float back ( put your finger on the spool to stop the line peeling off) and then letting it run on produces a lot of bites maggots would be my favourite bait for this.... You could try free lining a worm or live minnow maybe through the run you can't get any more natural and could well work for you, a split shot or 2 on the line will give you a bit more control...it will be a bit if trial and error but good luck with it.. 1 Quote Link to post
Nik_B 3,791
Look at this for fun mate...guaranteed to get you hooked Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
I fish a couple of small rivers for wild brown trout and although my preferred method is the fly a worm or fresh minnow suspended under a bubble float and just trotted along in the current is hard to beat for putting trout on the bank. Minimal tackle and skill needed. Quote Link to post
Bobba_fett 117
this sound more like what i imagined, but i am a real beginner and dont even know what kind of rod to get? would the cheapest rod do the trick? Quote Link to post
Nik_B 3,791
anything would do mate honestly...as long as you have a rod, reel and line and then float hook & maggots you will probably catch them and you'll have a whale of a time. Best of luck and looking forward to some photos Quote Link to post
