Mr Scent,

I think if you check what Ian said he was stating that there is a difference between a dog used on hare ( illegal) and rabbit and one used on foxes. At Birr he is judging dogs on conformation NOT working ability or speed . As i said although I have had my differences with Ian over the years I consider him to be a man of integrity who will judge fairly. That is all you can ask of any judge.

hare illegal ,how do work that one out ,in my gun club rules it clearly states that the coursing of hares can be provided on the land with dogs in slips ?only asking a question here cause its in the rules of the club

I might be wrong Scent but do you not need a licence to net and also course hares,in the gun club i think the law is you can shoot hares in season but not sure on that either as im not really one for rules,Rules were made to be broken, lol.
it says that coursing of hares can be provided to dogs in slips in season palso im baffled ,i dont hunt hares myself but that thats whats im my rules of the club ,my dogs barely catch foxes these days never mind hares lol

i think if you check, you will see running hares is still perfectly legal in ireland, north and south. this thread and the others say a lot about these shows and the people that you have involved with them. So far removed from the working dog culture in this country, yet put yourselves on a pedestal as a champion for fieldsports.

I don't set myself up as champion of anything other than running Game Fairs! But I do what I can wherever I can to support, promote and defend all legal country sports!

tell us how you manage to do that when you didn't even know hunting hares is still legal

At least there worked, not just for shows,my own bitch is 9 and id say a good run on a rabbit would kill her let alone a hare, but she aint got anything to prove.

Hare coursing has been banned in Ni but I think hare hunting with dogs and shooting - ill defined may still be legal - outside of the close season. Certainly our local beagles still hunt but I don't know whether they actually catch anything! Shooters had voluntarily place a moratorium on shooting hares for some time but some are being shot for research.

hare coursing events, not hare coursing. it's still perfectly legal to send a lurcher after puss

Not in the rep unless its a licenced event ran by a licenced coursing club.

I don't claim to know everything that's why we have experts writing on subjects in the magazine - hands up got this wrong because of the amendment that was brought to the wildlife order and the scarcity of Irish hares. I know QUB were wanting volunteers to shoot European hares for research but I don't know whether this was under license or not. I don't know anyone who shoots hares now and I love seeing them round our own area. Having checked I find that the amendment to bring NI into line with the UK was defeated and of course we supported this through our hunting correspondents for the magazine -the Chairman of the HANI and the sec of the Sunnyland Beagles. Got this one wrong but then I personally don't regard them as a quarry species any more! But then that's why we have a team of experts to write on subjects that innvolve them!

The point I was making was that different dogs would have different ability on different quarry.

Sorry typing fiinger was behind brain - don't know whether European Brown hare has the same protection as the Irish hare and I know a researcher from QUB contacted me to advertise in the magazine to get people to shoot Brown Hare as part of a research project. I declined because I thought it might provoke more anti hunting legislation and publicity. The public can understand fox hunting but few hare /stag hunting.

Ill say yet again racing breed dogs aren't breed to work there breed for pace to run in competations. still don't know weather it's on working ability as your brother stated in would happen in the fields? So Ian is it a race or on the dogs working ability in the fields on live game

yes it stated in the field...nigels dog is very capable of racing and hunting after all it is a lurcher. but yes when he said in the field he meant by coursing hare or rabbit by day or night though fox was never mentioned as this does not show speed or ability it only shows hardness and hardness was never what this was all about. they come on here and say that the lurchers at the shows can only run after a plastic bag. this is being very disrespectful to the lurcher men as i know alot of them that hunt with there dogs but also put them in for the races. At the end of the day what you do with your dog is your own business and no one has the right to come on here or any other forum and run you down for it. after all if the dog is well looked after and cared for isnt that all that matters. I would like to just point out at the' field of dreams' 70 percent of all the dogs racing where hunting lurchers not race breed dogs.

Lamping hares in the middle of may ,ian are u off your head , them race bred pussys won't last 2 minites Danny 300 go for it!

king lurcher your on about lamping hares and that speed and ability is not used in hunting foxes with lurchers your insulting every lurcher man thats hunts foxes all around the country and your judging lurchers at birr :haha::lol::lol:

the last thing i want to do is offend lurcher owners. this was not my intention to many read into things to much. let me explain without every word being scrutanised. i take it by the name you dig foxes? if so you should no it takes a very special dog to draw a fox and i would never intentionally run these dogs down, what i meant was there is no speed needed in drawing but you need a hard dog with guts. i did not know danny was a fox man i believed by his talk that he was a coursing man because he commented alot on chasing bags.. i hope this clears this matter up.

As far as my judging is concerned, i do not make myself out to be an expert but i do have 35 years of experience. and in those 35 years this is the first time i have had a negative comment on ability to judge. anytime i have judged i have done it fairly and to the best of my ability. i feel very honoured every time i am asked to judge a show weither it be a small family pet show or a large scale affair like birr and i know while i continue to judge i will judge fairly.........always have always will

your in sport Ian

A Tribute to the late John Shaw who passed away  last Thursday 6th November 25

      I Am Free
Do not grieve for me now my  friends and family, I am free
I am following the path God Laid for me
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To Love, to live, to hunt, to show my treasured Whippets, or play.
I found a peace at close of day.
Be not burdened with the times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief
Do not lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me
      God wanted me now,
      He set me free.
John, we will love you forever and you will be sadly missed by your loving family and all your Country Sporting Fraternity and in the show ring.
May the Angels above give you the best seat in Heaven and may your gentle soul rest in peace.
      For Country Sports Fraternity
