danielt 1
I saw two stoats the other day. I was walking the dog early morning round some country lanes, and came to a quiet junction with a pub on the corner, with the pubs dog was sleeping on the floor. as i turned the corner a stoat run from some bushes toawards the pub hid behind a bin, as i got closer the stoat run literally 2ft from the pubs dog which was flat out sleeping. The next day then, driving through some lanes another stoat run accross the road and stopped in the middle, so i slammed on the anchors and last minute Mr stoat legged it. 2 stoats in 2 days i saw, more than i have seen in the last year. J Darcy 5,871
I saw this myself once. Many years ago now i was mooching along a fieldside track, seeing if any rabbits ran into the small warren that lay under a tumble-down drystone wall. Something caught my eye , A rabbit , but it looked like it was convulsing on the floor. Not to worry thinks i, we will soon have it in the bag ...lol... my lurcher was so slow in those days i needed a sick bunny to make a catch! After a bit of careful stalking i managed to get to the rabbits refuge, the drystone wall and then walked out to the rabbit. But it wasnt just a rabbit, the funny movements were caused by a stoat dragging the rabbits along. Mr Stoat looked at me and i let the old dog go expecting a easy catch....His first stoat... surely in the bag, a 100% definate kill , this mustelid was so far out in the field there was no way he could make it back....was there? ....well the dog went to strike but stoaty had different plans and time after time the lithe critter out manouvred the lurcher until it made its approach close enough to the wall to do one quick straight line and away to safety .....After then...i had a great deal of respect for them.....beautiful killer Good Hunting JD

Genuine question, do you think a dog that is 100% with ferrets would still take stoats? H&J Edited August 8, 2007 by Hob&Jill
