Heres Another Mind Blowing Question,

I have a lash of timber to split and was looking at youtube and saw a bloke sharpening an axe,now he was using a stone.I always thought a file was the tool for the job,but after a bit he was able to cut slivers of paper with the axe,he even shaved the hairs off his arm with it.i was gobsmacked to say the least.is it necessary and beneficial to have an axe this sharp,this thing was scary sharp and is it possible to get an axe bought in a shop of common steel to this degree of fearsome sharpness.theres one to get ye thinking ,answers on an envelope to...........................

just seen your other thread and for some one who's not a people person you dont half ask alot of questions mate :D:thumbs: john

paulus im pissin meself here, :laugh: that was furkin funny,.....bullterrier im way more bold behind a computer than I am in real life,ask lanesra he met me and had the ''pleasure'' of my company for the day,lol.I believe hes still getting counselling.thanks everyone,i kind of thought that it being that sharp was not necessary but wasnt certain.forest of dean,does the grinder wear down the steel of the axe face very quickly?I have a 7 lb spliting axe here very usefull for thick rings(all [BANNED TEXT] less of the jokes) :laugh:

Wouldn't know didnt do it that often,lol axe is in shed blunt and now living in house without open fire.

I think it's just a lazy mans option.

Just read it properly,I have ran a old file over tip as well before now,I think it depends on how well you look after your tools,and how often you sharpen them.

an old bloke i know who`s in his 70`s and still tree felling always uses the file and wetstone method for his felling axes, athough a good few years back he took a swing at a log he had his foot on (wearing his slippers) the axe went though the log and sliced his big toe in 2. this is the man who had to have a testicle amputated whilst shooting pheasent with a catty one night when we were out :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

Baw,you dragon, :laugh: more than 4 pints and my thought and worries creep out of my mouth :icon_redface: the less we mention that the better :laugh: I'll sharpen the axe scary sharp if you dont behave now,lol :D

:laugh: I'm sure it'll raise its head a few times yet :D I know it made my morning when I read it :laugh:

I use a round file and then a quick going over with the stone. Like Millet said, you don't need a real sharp edge to split logs, I find it blunts real quickly if you have too sharp a profile on it.. :thumbs:
