Welsh Springers

Recommended Posts

Does anyone on here use welsh springers instead of english or cockers, and if so how do you rate them? Any positive info would be appreciated, as I've been thinking for a while about getting a spaniel to work alongside our lurcher bitch in the day and also a bit of shooting. Like the cockers but keep hearing that they can be a bit full on most of the time. Thanks

Cockers are great little working dogs, I'd take a cocker over an ess everytime. Not sure about the welsh springer, heard they're hard to stock break, can't stop them shagging sheep

   fecking had me laughing out loud then ya b*****d :toast:

Bafck on topic - Welsh Springers are ok but I think its very hard sourcing working stock. Have also seen it done when someone brings one that's "Work bred" along for a days beating, the dogs runs around for a bit and they then claim to breed working welsh springers.

The one I saw working wasnt anything special to watch and didn't work as hard / hunt aswell as any of the other spaniels or even my lab there that day. Quite a shame. Im sure if you can source tidy proper working stocck you'd be better off, just alot easier to get a good working springer/cocker pup

Lol @ pegleg, thanks for the replies lads, to be honest I'd prefer a cocker, it's just that I've heard they can be a bit hard going, and Ive not owned a spaniel before so am a bit out of my depth as regards training them

If you've never owned a spaniel I'd stay well clear of springers, too head strong and too full on.

I've got 5 cockers, 3 that are switched on and two that are a little immature and need handling very lightly. I'm bringing 2 pups on at the moment which is fun

Springers are great fun providing you put the time and effort in they will hunt all day at the same pace it's great to watch! Everybody seems to be getting cockers these days they are going through a "fashionable" phase at the moment! I've got a springer who beats, sits at the peg off the lead and sits down the shore and brings geese back for me proper all rounder. I spent hours training him and I think sitting in a muddy creek for an hour or two in the mornings waiting for geese steadied him up cos they do not like sitting around waiting for stuff to happen!!

I used to breed WSS For the show ring I was also a championship judge until I give it up

I worked my dogs with terriers and lurchers and I believe they have an excellent nose

but as said earlier people think they are headstrong this partially true but the main thing

is that they will not work if there is no scent unlike an ESS they are not so active and look lazy

but if there is anything there they will find it.

If you want an easily trained dog I would not recomend a WSS.

I had a welsh springer once, but i got fed up having to keep shouting "Cwmhere" to get him to come back.
