JohnGalway 1,043
Just thinking out loud here. I see expensive plastic coops offered in magazines and I got to thinking. How would a tinkered with IBC tank work as a hen house I saw an idea somewhere about using 5 gallon buckets as nesting boxes. Fix them horizontally to a wall and cut the lid in half. The rest, perches doors etc could be timber, could make vents with wire mesh or something more solid and slidey. If I got an invasion of redmite I could burn the few wooden pieces and give the plastic a good doing over with whatever was needed to kill the b*****ds, they wouldn't have much hiding places in a plastic tank, which I think was the benefit of the plastic coops. I am concerned about it being too hot and too cold internally though. Not experienced in keeping fowl so I thought I'd run it by ye
chris87 297
dont know about for hens but i use a few of them as dog boxes for last few years and they do a good job for that
patterdalejoel 669
it wont matter if its too cold, as long as they are hardy, layers etc will cope as long as there is no draughts. you have to worry about heat though
Aseel Shamo 13
it'll be a problem in the summer with the heat just get a cheapish shed from somewhere build some next boxes and leave the floor with the straw, you'll only have too treat it maybe once a year with creosote and you won't get a problem with the mites. patterdalejoel 669
dont get an overlap shed, if you get mites in there you literally will never get rid of them. had 2 burn 2 of mine. get a tongue and groove if you get a shed
