Bull Mastiff

Recommended Posts

Not sure where this topic should be really so if a mod needs to move it ill apologise now .

Im posting this for a good mate of mine , basically hes looking for a bull mastiff pup , hopefully from some decent stuff , doesnt want it for working just as a family pet/guard dog etc as hes away from home a fair bit and worries about security of wife and kids.

Hes kept a german shepard for years but recently been put to sleep due to age and ill health.

If anyone knows to / or has a litter due around the springtime he'd be very interested . thanks phil

Hi phil, tell him to go for another gsd mate, when i spoke to you last, i had bullmastiffs in the 80s. There not bad guard but not as good a gsd , Bullmastiffs are a very layed back breed, dont bark much. They look the part but but thats about it, even back in the 80s some people were putting ridge backs or pits to them them to fire them up. a good gds will aleart you some body about well before they get 50yds to your house and if need be would bite if it had to .Thats just what i think from having regards bullmastiffs and the breed are very unhealthy more so than show gsd s , get import gsd from working lines be more healthy+ great guards

ps Buck 1/2 working import lines gsd , if he did guard with his size and looks most would think twice about knocking your door lol

Had a Bullmastiff in the late eighties /early nineties and found him to be a superb guard, very switched on 24/7,TBH he was a bit of a pain and I couldnt live with that sort of dog now.He was from Naukeen lines off a bloke called Granville Blount in Coalville,Leicester. All his dogs were very active and vocal, not as bulldoggy as some ,what health problems are there in Bullmastiffs now Ray,looking back 20 years the breed was quite healthy for a large breed ,I assume breeding for large heads at the sacrifice of form/function is the order of the day :hmm: YIS Dave

i had bullmastiffs in 82 , my dog was( Berwick of codsall) won the LKA , and best male bullmastiff (Crufts 85).Alot of the dogs were as you say back then+ today, bred for size and large heads. And what they were bred for the keepers night dog, most of the breed couldnt do it to day, they over weight, slow no agilty and as said to docile .The old bullmastiff was a differnt type of dog most were only 80- 95 lb 26in, but very full on temp. I came out of the breed as they were getting bad (HD, and not long lived, bad mouths, breed . Even though my dog was quite big back then, he was agile and not bad guard. we had friends back then with good gsds not show suff , but great guard+ watch dogs, and the differnce at that job stood out to me , even back then, and as i say get good import line gsd would be very hard to beat i think. I like bull breeds was brought up with them as a kid (staffs, pit,) i still got a soft spot for bullmastiffs , but wouldnt get another for the reason s given

Didnt realise HD had reared its head within the breed, hardly suprising really, there were bad mouths knocking about then though(mine was quite undershot)as you say the breed would never be fit for purpose nowadays they were already becoming very "bully"back then, mine was about 25/26 tts and very athletic,at the time I baillifed on a local water and we did 4/5 miles twice a day.His favourite pastime was stalking/catching birds in the garden :icon_eek: allways liked the Oldwell dogs myself ,enough substance but looked like they would do the job given half a chance  if you have any pics of your Bullmastiffs shove em up,would be nice to see some  cheers Dave. sadly aint got none of mine :cray:
