Jachtterrier 50
Went for a dig satureday, one of the dogs killed the fox in the den when i wanted to dig her out. let one of the new dogs to ground to learn her to go to ground. the dog was staying in the den for a verry long time so i called for her but she was not coming. after almost an hour i could see her head and tryed to get her but she was back in the pipe very fast. so we where waiting again, after another half hour waiting the dog was still in the pipe. we decided to close the pipe with some wood so the dog could not walk away and come back later and let the dog walk oud of the pipe. after about hours later the dog still dont wanted to come out. she was playing a game with us like she owned the pipe and the dead fox now. we closed the pipe again and left her in the den fox a whole nicht. the morning after i went to the den again and opened it. the dog came out and walked back to the car with me like nothing happends. i never seen a dog doing this before. are there other lads with a dog doing this? why is a dog doing this? what can i do about it? Put an electric collar on? Quote Link to post
Rory4 267
I seen it when we were checking a earth the dog wasnt searching for fox just hiding from us would come out when tried grab ran down the nearest hole like a skulking ferret it did this more than one occassion, a complete pain in the ass and massive waist of time, it wasnt even a good terrier surprised the owner kept it! could you not of just dug the fox out and the dog would of come out for rag, then grab it! Jachtterrier 50
i located the dog at 8 feet deep and the ground was frozen. when i should dig her out i think she went do another place in the den when opening the pipe. i thought let him stay for a long thime should be a ponishment for her so she will come out faster the next time? i let her enter an empty den before and she did exactly the same. i bought this jagdterrier from a pig hunter couple of weeks ago because its really small for a jagd and want to breed my jagds as small as possible because lots of them are to big for earthwork. but when she is keeping this behavour she can nog stay here. skycat 6,174
What you need to do is get the dog coming to you for a reward: but first, is the dog nervous of you? Is she staying in the hole because she is frightened of being shouted at, or hit? How is your relationship with her? Does the dog ever go off the lead other than for you to put it in the hole? Or, does she simply want to stay with the dead fox? Does she rag it when she finds it? Is she being possessive over it? Knowing the reason behind the behaviour means that you can know how to cure it. If the dog simply wants to stay with the dead fox then you can encourage her out by keeping a piece of fox skin or brush in your pocket: lure her out with that and let her have a good rag on it before putting her back on the lead: that way she gets her reward which is to 'kill' the fur. If she is reluctant to come out because she knows she will go back on the lead and end her freedom, the same game works, but you need to work on building a bond between you and the dog so she knows that she can have her fun with you close by: again, tugging on the fox skin is the fun. I've sent you a pm. Quote Link to post
Jachtterrier 50
she simply wants to stay in the den. since i have her see runs free around the farm all day and she comes inside in the evening. when were out for a walk she walks free with the other dogs without walking away. now i am starting to get a bond with her in the beginning she walked away from me when i wanted to pick her up. she wont come verry fast when i ask her to come. the pig hunter had her in a kennel 7 days a week and only came out for a hunt, the man had about 40 dogs so dont think he spend a lot of time in this dog. i already worked one fox with her this one was bolted and she taked a good rag oudside the den. have had her in an empty den and she dit the same, dit not come out for 1 hour even i walk away 500 mts further Quote Link to post

GOBSHITE 107
I've had a few terriers like this over the years, there's no rhym or reason for it. The only thing you can do is have faith and walk away. The more you spend time trying to coax the terrier out the more pissed off you'll get and the more the terrier will pick up on it. As long as your terrier is stock broken then as i said have faith and walk away. The worst terrier i had with this fault was a bitch i had whilst i was doing terrier work for a pack in Shropshire, she was that bad if i even turned around to shout her when she came out she'd see me facing her and run straight back in, all i could do was keep walking on and wait for her to catch me up. snizle06 202
I have seen dogs doing this that are not getting enough work and being tried at every hole the owner sees. Try only entering her in occupied earths and up the work load. Quote Link to post
