hard work pays off

Recommended Posts

well basicly iv just got back into ferreting and instead of poaching like i used to do iv been knocking on doors for permission , whilst on my way to work this morning i drove past a farm / equestrian centre and decided to knock on and ask the question ...

turning up in my work clothes and not some scruffy old rags i think helped and i spoke to owner politely which is a must .

now iv been given the whole job lot of pest control on the grounds from ratting / pigeon shooting and as much rabbiting as i want over 59 acres !!!

very happy to help out in whatever way i can on the farm and the owner is more than happy for me to get started straight away .

plus - its only 10 mins from my house haha

it shows that if you want something enough just keep knocking and it will pay off

we myself and diggermad went for a butchers at the rats with his two terriers earlier today , dogs knew were the rats wer but unfortunatly it was under concrete floors in the stables so we moved across the farm to where the family chickens are kept and got some good marks from the dogs but again there was to much livestock in the pens to let the dogs go and have a closer look plus with it being the first day on the permission we didnt want to upset anyone as you can imagine .

anyway we decided to have a walk of the land and see what was about , first thing we saw was a nice 4/5 hole warren that looked to be well used in the corner of a field, walked alot of the fields then and found evidence that rabbits were about so we carried on into a heavily wooded area that runs the whole length of the permission , straight away we dropped onto a warren which the dogs kindley lead us to , that was it then we wer finding one after another all atleast 5 holes plus and well used also the dogs were marking well for us just a shame we didnt take the ferts today .

we carried on further into the woods to find a monster of a warren about 15+ holes at a glance but id say there wer alot more and again the dogs marked well on this , after finding this we thaught " this is the jackpot as no signs of anyone working it before " anyway on we went and sitting in the cover was a wabbit , off it ran but it had to much ground on the dogs so they just followed scent and we carried on rambleing threw the very wet / boggy forrest , we then hit a patch were we didnt see any warrens for about 15 mins , walked right over towards a motorway to find another monster on a big soft , grass filled mound , dogs again telling us there was something home .

the weather took a turn for the worse then so we decided to head back , eventually got out of the forrest hahaha may have walked round in a big circle once or twice but it was very thick and no foot paths but hay ho we made it back to the fields ,

so not a wasted day as we first thaught with the rats , its actually made the next visit alot easier as i know were to start with the ferrets .

seen a dear or two aswell on out travels threw the woods , very nice place to find permission and all well kept fields etc !

a big thanks to charlie " Maddigger " and his two terriers jack and gypsie

just trying to get myself dry and the clothes are in the wash now
